Why Did Solange Separate From Her Husband?

Have you heard? Grammy Award-winning singer Solange announced on Nov. 1 that she and her husband, director Alan Ferguson, have separated.

Though they were famously private throughout their 11-year relationship, some fans couldn’t help but admire how perfect they seemed together. They’re both style and art icons, exposing their creative equity on various collaborations from Solange’s 2016 album, A Seat at the Table. And Solange herself had previously mentioned how “solid” their relationship was.

So, where did it go wrong? Let’s talk about why Solange separated from Ferguson.

Solange hinted at the reason in her separation announcement

In the note, which the “True” singer posted to Instagram, Solange seemed to suggest that she outgrew the relationship, noting that the past two years have brought her “more physical and spiritual transition and evolution than ever before.”

“My body left me with no choice but to listen and be still. Within that stillness I begin my journey in confronting my worst enemy, fear,” she wrote. “I’ve lived my best and worst moments in front of the lens and gaze of the world since I was a teenager. I’ve always tried to live in my truth no matter how ugly or full of love it is. I’ve also tried to carve out the space to protect my heart, and my life as it unfolds, evolves, and changes.”

She said she met Ferguson, whom she called “phenomenal,” 11 years ago and he “changed every existence” of her life. But now, she’s ready to enter a new stage.

“Early this year, we separated and parted ways,” Solange continued. “(And tho it ain’t nan nobody business) I find it necessary to protect the sacredness of my personal truth and to live in it fully just as I have before and will continue to do.”

How did Solange and Alan Ferguson meet?

Solange, 33, and Ferguson, 56, met in 2008 after being introduced by singer Janelle Monáe. He’s directed at least one of Monáe’s music videos and also helped create visuals for musicians such as Fall Out Boy and Katy Perry.

Solange told Nicole Bitchie in an old interview that she was actually the one who made the first move.

“I was the one who approached him, so I have always sort of historically been one of those girls that goes after something that I’m into,” she explained. “I’m not very old school and like, I’m not gonna wait on you. Wait for you to approach me type of situation.”

They got married in November of 2014 in an all-white ceremony in New Orleans. Beyoncé and Jay-Z were among the guests.

Though Solange generally kept quiet about their relationship, she opened up about it in a 2017 chat with Interview magazine, describing it as “intact” and “solid.”

“When I go out in the world, I know that when I come home, I’m going to find peace with him,” she continued.

Who else has Solange dated?

Solange used to be married to her junior high school sweetheart, Daniel Smith. They got married in 2004 while she was pregnant with their son, Julez, and then relocated to Idaho so that Smith could finish his studies. But the move eventually started to take a toll on the Houston native.

“It was one of the most bittersweet moments of my life because I was so in love with Julez, and having spent a lot of time on the road, I yearned to be in one place, to have the opportunity to really ground myself with him,” Solange told Elle magazine of the move in a 2017 interview. “But it was isolating and lonely, and so cold and dark. And it was just Julez and me most of the time. It was hard to imagine being able to progress in my career in any way.”

She filed for divorce in 2006. The divorce was finalized the following year.

Solange has also dated Omarion and (allegedly) Wale. You can read more about those romances here.
