Why Does Meghan Markle Get So Much More Attention Than Other Royal Family Members?

People love the royal family. But when it comes to media coverage, Meghan Markle seems to have all the other royals beat. The Duchess of Sussex may be new to the royal life, but she has taken the press by storm. At the same time, she doesn’t seem as highly rated among the public as the Duchess of Cambridge, Kate Middleton. So why does she get so much more attention than other royal family members?

Meghan is much newer to the family than Kate

One of the most obvious reasons Meghan gets a lot of media attention is because she’s still so new to the royal family. While she isn’t the newest family member (Princess Eugenie welcomed husband Jack Brooksbank into the family last October), she’s the newest relevant member (no offense, Jack). Kate and Will have been a couple for years now, and Harry had always been linked to Chelsy Davy. So when a new woman showed up in his life and things moved so quickly between them, it was bound to garner a lot of attention from both the press and the people.

Meghan has broken barriers within the royal family

Meghan isn’t a traditional royal. Whereas Kate fits the role so perfectly that it’s almost as if she was made for it, Meghan brought something new to the table. Meghan is an American, and she’s already been divorced once, which used to be frowned upon by royal family members. She is also biracial, which broke a major barrier among royals, since she was the first half-black half-white woman to marry into the modern royal family (there may have been other black family members centuries prior, but it’s unclear). Plus, Meghan is very independent and outspoken; she changes the rules, which the royals aren’t used to. And it has shaken things up a bit within the family, though not necessarily in a bad way.

Meghan’s personal life is more newsworthy than others in the family

While most royals have a prim and proper background, Meghan does not. She comes from divorced parents, and she’s had a rocky relationship with her father for years now. Plus, she has a poor relationship with her half-sister, Samantha Markle, and Samantha has made plenty of negative comments about Meghan, which warrant media attention. Meghan also supposedly divorced her husband out of nowhere and mailed the ring back to him, which made some question her character. And at the time of her wedding, her nephew created a strain of marijuana in her name, which left the media abuzz, too. Meghan is also pregnant, which means that any week now, she will give birth to the newest member of the royal family. And for obvious reasons, the media has been all over that.

The media feeds off of any negativity thrown at the duchess

With all of the questionable news about Meghan, people have begun to develop a negative opinion toward her. And with that, the media fed off that negative energy. Rumors have circulated about Meghan’s treatment of her staff as well as a supposed feud between her and Kate. Realistically, these rumors are likely false, but if the public feels negatively, then the media will capitalize on that. Meghan simply isn’t as “clean cut” as other royal family members, which the press has used to its advantage.
