Sarah “Fergie” Ferguson and Prince Charles’ brother, Prince Andrew, were married in a lavish ceremony at Westminster Abbey in 1986. Two years after they tied the knot the royal couple welcomed their daughter, Princess Beatrice, and in 1990 their second daughter, Princess Eugenie, was born.

Their marriage though wasn’t all wedded bliss but despite separating in 1992 and divorcing in 1996, the two have remained on very friendly terms. Ferguson and Andrew even chose to live in the same home long after they split and the duchess has previously stated that they are the world’s “happiest divorced couple.”

That said, many have often questioned why they got divorced in the first place and if they would ever remarry. In December 2018, talk of them possibly getting back together heated up again after Fergie shared a Christmas card full of pictures of her ex-husband. Here’s more on that and a few other reasons why people think (or are hoping) they could get back together again.

Why they got divorced?

The duke and duchess’ marriage wasn’t free of scandals and it has been reported that some members of the royal family had grown tired of Fergie’s antics by doing things like accepting a free fur coat, which angered animal rights activists. The last straw though came in 1992 when the entire family was having breakfast at Balmoral Castle and reading the morning papers in which they saw photos of Ferguson sunbathing topless in St. Tropez and getting her toes sucked by financial adviser John Bryan.

E! News reported that the queen told Fergie to leave at the moment and four years later, she and Andrew officially divorced.

What makes people think they could get back together?

Ferguson and the prince never really escaped reconciliation rumors since they remained so close over the years and their outings together, gestures, and unwavering support for one another have only fueled that speculation.

In 2018, they were side-by-side for Princess Eugenie’s wedding to Jack Brooksbank in October, and a few days earlier were spotted horseback riding together. Moreover, an interview given by the duchess eight years ago resurfaced in July. In it, Ferguson gushed about her ex-husband and said that she still loved him.

“I think the love I had for him then, is the love I still have for him now,” she explained, adding, “I still married the best and he’s the greatest gentleman that I know.”

Then came the Christmas card Fergie posted online which featured several pictures of her daughters and Andrew. She was not in any of them but the fact that she shared so many of her ex including one of just him riding a horse was enough to keep her fans hopeful that they will remarry.

Why they likely won’t remarry

But you’re one of those people holding onto the idea that the Duke and Duchess of York could one day say “I do” again that isn’t very likely, at least not now.

Many believe that one of the biggest reasons they won’t is because of Prince Philip’s loathe for his former daughter-in-law. Andrew’s dad has held a grudge against Ferguson for many years. He reportedly never forgave her for the embarrassment and damage he feels she did to his family’s reputation with her topless, toe-sucking scandal. He despises her so much that his son remarrying her is something he definitely would not stand for.

Fergie though previously gave another reason as to why they haven’t done so.

“Why aren’t we married? Everybody says well then surely it should be the happy ever after ending. We are the happy ever after, it’s just not about marriage,” Ferguson explained in an interview. “It’s more about this extraordinary friendship we have. Andrew and I, we have a love which is unfathomable, it’s so great and the two girls [Princess Beatrice and Eugenie] love it. Should we be married? I don’t think we’re meant to be married. I think I am free and wild and going around, but nothing will take his place in my heart.”
