Why Everyone Wants Michael B. Jordan to Be the Next Superman
British actor Henry Cavill has been playing Clark Kent/Superman since 2013, though his status as the famed superhero is now up in the air and it seems unlikely that he will return to the big screen in another DC movie. While a lot of fans are understandably disappointed at the thought of Henry Cavill not being Superman anymore, others are already looking forward to seeing who could be the next actor to portray the iconic character.
Michael B. Jordan is currently at the top of many people’s list for being the next Superman and there are good reasons for that. Let’s take a look at why fans are excited at the thought of Jordan taking on this role.
Michael B. Jordan’s character in ‘Black Panther’ was very popular
Jordan made his way into the public’s consciousness after playing Killmonger in Marvel’s 2018 box office hit Black Panther. Even though Killmonger was supposed to be a villain fighting against the main hero T’Challa (also known as Black Panther), fans actually liked him a lot.
Killmonger is the alias of Erik Stevens, a young man who grew up in the U.S. and wanted justice for black people around the world. His motive for fighting T’Challa was simply so that he could use the impressive technology Wakanda possesses to help disenfranchised folks of color. As such, fans everywhere ended up supporting Killmonger and also finding themselves enjoying Michael B. Jordan’s big screen performance.
Jordan also won several awards for his work.
Michael B. Jordan has expressed interest in playing Superman
There have been rumors that Jordan will be back in Black Panther 2, but in the meantime, the actor has also stated that he would not mind joining the DC Universe to play Superman. However, it is important to note that he does not want to be Clark Kent.
“There is a huge upside to it,” Jordan told Oprah Winfrey in response to rumors about him being Superman, “but being under that microscope, being picked apart and compared to so many different versions of Superman… I would rather do something original. I’ll be Calvin Ellis.”
Calvin Ellis is a version of Superman on Earth 23. The character debuted in 2009 and is based on President Barack Obama, so aside from fighting bad guys like Superman, Ellis is also a President of the United States. It’s definitely an interesting way for Jordan to play a legendary role while also keeping him from being compared to past actors who have been Superman.
Fans want Michael B. Jordan to help make the genre more diverse
Jordan actually once said that he wanted “to go out for roles that were written for white characters” instead of limiting himself to only parts written for black actors. Thus, it’s not surprising that Jordan is very much up for portraying Superman (who has historically been white) and giving the character a new face.
Many fans are also thrilled about Jordan taking on Superman since it is another step forward in diversifying the genre that has been dominated by white male characters for too long.
With the success of films such as Wonder Woman and Captain Marvel, people are beginning to see that female superhero can kick butts and save the world just as well as male superheroes can, which is no doubt a positive change in Hollywood.
However, lead roles for men and women of color (as well as LGBTQ+ and disabled individuals, for example) are still rare. Although Michael B. Jordan as Superman will not solve every problem that the superhero genre has concerning diversity, it is another opportunity for more people to see a character like themselves on the big screen.
