If you’re a fan of Chip and Joanna Gaines, you know how important family is to them. Spending time with family and eating a meal together is important to Joanna Gaines. Here’s why she feels family dinner is a vital part of the day.

Designing a welcoming dining room

Since dinner is special to Joanna, she takes great care to design a welcoming dining room. For her, it’s more than a place to eat meals. In her book Homebody: A Guide to Creating Spaces You Never Want to Leave, she advises home decorators to design their space in a way that makes them and their dinner guests feel good:

If your house has more than one dining space, think about transforming one of these areas into something you would use more often. If you have a formal dining room that you rarely sit in, consider giving it a new purpose and build out your breakfast nook to serve as your primary dining area instead. This can work both ways. Perhaps it’s the formal space that remains while the nook becomes an extra sitting area or a useful coffee bar. When considering these types of changes, whatever makes the most sense for your family is really all that should matter.

Tech-free time

Joanna doesn’t allow phones during meals. Technology makes it hard for a lot of people to focus on their loved ones. Ipads, mobile phones, and other tech tools often get in the way of bonding time. This is why Joanna makes sure to have a ban on phones during meals. She said in a blog post she prefers for everyone to engage in meaningful conversation. “We incorporated these hanging leather pouches at each table to serve as a place to store cell phones during the meal. At our house, we keep phones away from the table at mealtimes so we can focus on each other and the conversation around the table,” said Joanna on her blog.

Joanna’s day isn’t complete without family dinner. In her book, Joanna says sitting at the dining room table with her family is a significant moment during the day for her. She’s not satisfied with simply eating dinner at the kitchen island; she says she prefers to leave that area for snacks or lunch.

The decorator says family dinner time is a great escape from the chaos of life: “On most nights, it’s where we gather once everyone is home for the evening and we have nowhere else to be. In the midst of our busy lives and scattered schedules, a leisurely meal around the table is just what we all need to feel grounded.”

Her favorite room in the house

Although the dining area means a lot to Joanna, it’s not her favorite room in the house. In an interview with Today, she said her favorite room in her farmhouse is the laundry room. With five kids, it’s likely she spends a lot of time in there. “I love my laundry room. I know that’s a funny thing to love, but this summer I gave it a complete makeover and now it’s a place that inspires me. Just the natural light alone makes me want to settle in and drink my morning coffee there. As a bonus, it helps me dislike laundry day a little less,” said Joanna.
