Why Fans Feel Slighted That HBO Cut the Ice Cream Cone Scene in ‘Big Little Lies’

Fans were upset not to have witnessed the much-anticipated ice cream throwing scene from Big Little Lies. Rightly upset, the scene was cut after stills of the debacle were released last year while filming the second season.

Big Little Lies has a huge following of fans. It’s based on the same-titled best seller by Liane Moriarty. It’s a dark and comedic tale of murder and intrigue in a tranquil beachfront town in Monterey, California. The community is fueled by rumors and deception and is enough to have anyone hooked.

Fans thought the moment was coming, as they should have

Fans of Big Little Lies had waited for the moment that never came. The stills released earlier last year showed Madeline Martha Mackenzie (Reese Witherspoon) throwing an ice cream cone at Mary Louise Wright (Meryl Streep).

The scene wasn’t gutted completely, but the epic showdown that could have been was cut. You can still feel the anger coming from Witherspoon’s character when she calls out Mary Louise for her treatment of Celeste (Nicole Kidman) and her slanderous portrayal of her being an unfit parent.

Streep told Entertainment Tonight at the Big Little Lies premiere that the scene would be available in the DVD extras.

“[Reese] just told me it’s not in the show,” said Streep. “It’s [going to be] in the DVD extras.”

‘Big Little Lies’ has a huge fan following

There’s no doubt about it, people love Big Little Lies. Whether it’s the plethora of stars on the show, the scene setting, or the stories behind the characters themselves, the show has fans hooked and wanting more.

Fans took to Twitter after the premiere of the first episode of the second season to dish on Streep’s portrayal of Mary Louise. She’s a no-nonsense type of person, and isn’t too worried about being liked by the people of Monterey.

Witherspoon even talked about getting her revenge on Mary Louise

Witherspoon told ET that pelting Streep was “a top five moment in my career, for sure.” She didn’t just stop there.

Witherspoon went on to talk more about the scene on Good Morning America. She told Robin Roberts, “I might or might not have thrown an ice cream cone at Meryl Streep. In a scene, ’cause she made me mad… And I hit her! Like, I nailed it! She turned around and she was like, ‘Yeah you got me.'”

‘Big Little Lies’ fans were understandably disappointed at not seeing the ice cream scene

Fans were understandably disappointed with the cut scene. The photos of the incident had already taken over the internet last year, and the stage was set for a showdown that would never be. Although the ice cream scene will apparently be available in the DVD extras, it just isn’t the same.

True Big Little Lies fans will definitely get their hands on the DVD set to see the epic showdown that was promised. They’ll just have to wait a little longer for it.
