Why Fans Think Derick Dillard Ruined the Close Relationship the Duggar Family Had With the Bates Family
If there’s anything the Duggars are known for, it’s having a huge family of 21. Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar attained fame through TLC’s 19 Kids and Counting, and fans have been following the family for years as their 19 children have grown up, married, and started having their own children. The Duggars were seemingly the largest family on reality TV for awhile — but more recently, there’s another family with 19 kids that fans are paying attention to. The Bates family from Bringing Up Bates are quite similar to the Duggars as they’re also a family of 21 — and it shouldn’t be too much of a surprise to know the Duggars and the Bates are great friends.
It seems there may have been one person who could have caused a rift between the two families — and that’s Jill Duggar’s husband, Derick Dillard. Here’s why fans think Derick ruined the ties between the families.
Derick got himself and Jill Duggar removed from Counting On due to his tweets
Fans have always been wary of Jill Duggar’s husband, Derick — but they were still shocked when he began posting hateful, inflammatory content to Twitter. People reminds us Derick tweeted transphobic comments about a fellow TLC star, Jazz Jennings. “What an oxymoron … a ‘reality’ show which follows a non-reality,” Derick tweeted following a promo for Jazz’s show, I Am Jazz. He also tweeted, “‘Transgender’ is a myth. Gender is not fluid; it’s ordained by God.”
Fans quickly took to Twitter to defend Jazz, and even then, Derick was unapologetic and purposely misgendered Jazz. “I want to be clear. I have nothing against him,” Derick wrote, “I only have issue with the words and definitions being propagated here.” This promptly got both him and Jill removed from TLC’s Counting On, too. TLC released a statement saying, “We want to let our viewers know that Derick Dillard has not participated in Counting On for months and the network has no plans to feature him in the future. … TLC is proud to share the story of Jazz Jennings and her family and will continue to do so.”
The Bates family unfollowed Derick on social media after the controversy
Derick bothered more than just TLC with his tweets. It seems he may have hit a nerve with the Bates family, too. While the Bates follow the same faith as the Duggars and may share similar views as Derick, they surely do not want to be part of the hate and controversy that he’s spreading. And In Touch Weekly notes eagle-eyed fans took to Reddit to share that members of the Bates family were unfollowing Derick on social media. Jessa Duggar’s husband, Ben Seewald, also unfollowed Derick.
As one Reddit user noted, “The shunning begins… the Bates family have unfollowed Jill and Derick. Individual accounts unfollowing just Derick, meanwhile Ben unfollowed him, who’s next?” And another fan replied, “For as much as they probably agree with what he’s saying, at some point, they don’t want to be responsible for negative attention that this will invariably draw.”
The Duggars and the Bates seem to still be on good terms, however
So, have the Bates completely snubbed the Duggars since Derick’s outburst? It seems that’s not the case at all. Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar have maintained a close relationship with Gil and Kelly Bates for over a decade — and they even have celebrated anniversaries together. While the Bates may not be happy with Derick’s social media activity, it’s clear their long-lating friendship with the family lives on. And Romper also notes that several photos have been taken of the Duggars and the Bates after Derick’s outburst.
Fans also wouldn’t be surprised to see a Duggar-Bates courtship in the future, proving the two families are closer than ever now. Even Erin Bates has spoken to Entertainment Tonight about the possibility of a courtship between the families. “As much as we see each other, I think there’s going to be an attraction somewhere,” Erin said. “I don’t know where yet, but I think it’s gonna happen.”
