Why ‘Grey’s Anatomy’s’ Camilla Luddington Had To Change Wedding Venues
Camilla Luddington of the ABC hit series Grey’s Anatomy recently wed her longtime boyfriend and fiancé, actor Matthew Alan. The two tied the knot on August 17 in front of 70 of their closest friends and family. The intimate gathering was held with the beautiful backdrop of the California coastline, according to People.
While the venue was breathtaking, it hadn’t been the first choice of the couple. Luddington had originally picked another special location but due to a tragic event, the actress had to come up with a different plan.
Making it official
Luddington and Alan have been together since 2008. “We went to a Temper Trap concert together. It was our first date!” Luddington told People. The couple chose the song “Sweet Disposition” from the group for their first dance as husband and wife.
In April 2017, the pair welcomed their daughter Hayden. Luddington felt that having Hayden witness their marriage vows added a special significance to their official union. “There’s something romantic to us about solidifying that family unit by having the ceremony and actually having Hayden present,” Luddington said. “To be honest, I’m just excited to get into that new normal of married life.”
An unexpected turn of events
Luddington had been planning the couple’s special day for quite some time, and had her eye on a specific venue. “I had a house that I had actually kept pictures of for two years before we were planning on getting married,” the actress told People. “When we finally came up with a date, we decided to try and do it on hiatus this year at this house. We were more than halfway through organizing it and had the vendors and everything. Our amazing wedding planner [Karen Waldron] had done a bunch of events there.”
Unfortunately, Luddington discovered earlier in the year that their dream location had been a casualty of the California wildfires. “We found out in March that the house had been destroyed by the fires. They didn’t know how much damage had been done. It took a while. We ended up really scrambling. Karen was really amazing,” she told People. ““I cried in the car. I was just so excited. It was a place I had saved for such a long time. When you start decorating and start doing the tastings, you start picturing your wedding a certain way, and then it all gets thrown out the window. But I think it was all meant to be.”
Luddington and Alan were able to find another venue for their wedding date and tied the knot at the Ritz-Carlton Bacara Hotel in Santa Barbara, California. “Matt and I actually have history at Bacara,” she said. “It was one of our first trips together as a couple. We didn’t know if it was the right place for us, but then we went up there and as soon as we walked in, we were like, ‘This is it.’”
According to People, the Grey’s Anatomy star remembered one moment in particular as the highlight of the day. “Seeing him for the first time was amazing, we both just couldn’t stop staring at each other and smiling,” Luddington said.
The couple also recruited someone special to perform the ceremony, making the nuptials even more memorable. “Our best friend, Shawn Aly, was our officiant, which made the actual ceremony part so intimate and memorable because he was able to actually speak about seeing our relationship first-hand and make it personal to us,” she said.
The ambience of the event also set the tone of romance and refinement. “The couple wanted romantic elegance with lots of natural elements, set against crisp white walls mixed with wood tables, hanging rattan light fixtures, an abundance of white and green floral, that kept it beautifully classic and fresh,” said Waldron of Ampersand Entertainment Light. “Touches of gold accents were mixed into the tables for just that splash of glam.”
Congratulations to the happy couple!
