Why HGTV’s Christina Anstead Came Out of Maternity Leave

Christina Anstead of HGTV’s Flip or Flop is expecting her first child with husband Ant Anstead this September. She already has two children from her previous marriage to Tarek El Moussa, who she still partners with for the home renovation show.

Earlier this month, Anstead announced she was starting her maternity leave in preparation for her baby boy on the way. Apparently her time off didn’t last long since the reality star recently posted that she’s cut her leave short for this reason.

Blending families

Anstead and Ant tied the knot in December, and discovered she was pregnant soon after their honeymoon, according to Entertainment Tonight. “[Having kids] wasn’t on our mind — if it happened, it happened. It definitely was not something where, ‘We want a baby right now…’” Anstead said. “We got back from our honeymoon [and] found out I was pregnant… I felt off during the honeymoon and when I got home, I felt I should take a test, not thinking at all it was going to show positive. I was just like, ‘OK, this makes five — here we go!’”

In addition to Anstead’s daughter Taylor and son Brayden that she shares with El Moussa, Ant also has two children from a previous marriage: Amelie, 15, and Archie, 12. The blended family has already created a bond with each other. “The kids are such different ages, but they get along so well,” Anstead told Entertainment Tonight. “It’s been super fun traveling and spending time together and we are looking forward to welcoming this new baby.”

Solo show

Anstead launched her own show on HGTV, Christina on the Coast, in May. According to House Beautiful, the show was a hit. “This is the authentic me, unfiltered, just how I want to do a show,” Anstead told People in May. “I’m an executive producer. I help write every script. I approve everything. It’s just been an incredible experience… It’s totally different for HGTV.”

The show’s success may have been due to the many life changes Anstead was going through at the time, which were highlighted on the program. Episodes included Anstead’s search for her dream home, her thriving relationship with Ant, and wrapped up the season with the couple’s backyard wedding.

Second season

On August 3, Anstead announced the start of her maternity leave on Instagram. “This mama is off the clock for the summer… if you need me you know where to find me – in our pool on my @ledgelounger 💦 📖 ☀️” she wrote.

Apparently, she was quickly motivated to head back to work when Christina on the Coast was renewed for a second season. “HGTV knew Christina on the Coast would be a winner and the series absolutely delivered. More than 12 million viewers tuned in to watch the freshman season because they loved having a new opportunity to watch Christina evolve personally and professionally,” HGTV President Jane Latman said, according to Deadline. “We’ve seen her continue to gain popularity with our audience, so we couldn’t be more excited about the performance of the series. In season two, we will join Christina as she grows her design business and navigates relationships with her friends and family, including her husband and new baby. Everyone is rooting for her and her family as they build a whole new life.”

With the show’s renewal, the temptation to tackle a new project was too great for Anstead to pass up. “I came out of maternity leave (currently 37 weeks pregnant) because I can’t resist a good challenge,” she wrote on Instagram on August 23. “Fun day back on set with these guys starting a new episode of #ChristinaOnTheCoast Season 2!! It’s a BIG project in Laguna Niguel – gonna make for an amazing transformation… @chardphoto was our wedding photographer and I’m excited to tackle this project with him … Rich, ready or not here we go 🔨”

Season two of HGTV’s Christina on the Coast is set to premiere in early 2020!
