Why Is Jughead Missing In the ‘Riverdale’ Season 4 Trailer?
We hate to break your pastel pink world of milkshakes and first kisses, but summer is over. However, it’s not all bad news. The cooler months mean the fourth season of Riverdale is coming soon. And, on September 11, The CW dropped its first teaser for the season premiere. That said, the promo contains a terrifying storyline no one is ready for. In the 60-second Riverdale Season 4 trailer, Jughead (Cole Sprouse) goes missing, and not going to lie, it doesn’t look good.
What happens in the ‘Riverdale’ Season 4 promo?
It’s senior year, baby. But will every character in the CW hit series make it out of high school? From the looks of the Riverdale preview for season 4, it’s debatable. The trailer starts off on a dark note — literally. Fans see FP (Skeet Ulrich), Archie (KJ Apa), Veronica (Camila Mendes), Betty (Lili Reinhart), Kevin (Casey Cott), and the rest of the town searching for Jughead in the woods at night. They scream Jughead’s name a number of times before the teaser continues to preview other storylines for the rest of the cast. But not before Veronica says, “Isn’t it crazy? It just nine months, life as we know it will be over.” Yikes.
Now, before you start making up fan theories, the Riverdale season 4 trailer briefly shows Jughead alive and well. “Our deepest desires and our darkest fears,” he says.
Nevertheless, the teaser eventually goes back to the Jughead search party. This time, the Riverdale team paired the scene with another, much scarier, clip. Suddenly, fans see Jughead trapped in an enclosed space, thrashing his arms around like a madman. “Let me out,” he screams. “Help!”
Hold up, so this explains why Jughead goes missing — sort of. But was Jughead buried alive? How did he end up there? And more importantly, who trapped him? Per usual, when one question is answered, a thousand more arise.
Will Jughead die in ‘Riverdale’ Season 4?
As of now, only the Riverdale team knows what’s coming for Jughead in the fourth season. Of course, the trailer makes fans worry Jughead will die. But no one knows when Jughead goes missing. Truth be told, it could happen as early as the premiere or closer to the spring break beanie-burning scene from season 3.
Speaking of the scene, Riverdale‘s San Diego Comic-Con 2019 panel executive producer Robert Aguirre-Sacasa hinted at Jughead’s storyline for season 4. “The mystery of what happened to Jughead [will be big],” Aguirre-Sacasa said, per TV Insider. “In the episodes leading up to it, we’re going to flash-forward to events that will [help put] the pieces together.”
Aguirre-Sacasa also opened up about Riverdale Season 4 during an interview with E! News. And it looks like the new season will be taking its time to build up the mystery behind the spring break scene.
“I think some of the fun of season four and flashing to that is understanding and figuring out how we get to that point in the story,” he told the publication. “So it’s not something that is immediately going to happen, but we’re going to start sort of seeing threads pulled in that direction. We’re going to see what leads up to it and then we’re going to see the fallout to that scene, and that’s sort of the general shape of season four.”
For now, we wouldn’t worry too much about Jughead’s fate just yet. At the very least, this means Sprouse isn’t leaving Riverdale. He will be on the series for the fourth season as they put the pieces of the spring break scene together. Let’s just hope it doesn’t end with Jughead’s death.
