Why Is Kanye West Building Homes Inspired by ‘Star Wars’?
Kanye West has always been a big Star Wars fan.
In 2008, he dressed up as a stormtrooper while Kim Kardashian, who was not yet his girlfriend, was dressed as Princess Leia.
The reason for the elaborate costuming was Kanye was working on a pilot for a puppet comedy show called Alligator Boots. The show never made it to the air and according to the Hollywood Reporter, all that remains is a single photo of the two of them and a singing puppet.
Fast-forward to today, and Kanye has revealed that his dream is to develop low-income housing units that resemble the Star Wars homes on Tatooine, where Luke and Anakin Skywalker lived.
From debt to success
West wasn’t always the success he is today. In fact, he once confessed to being $53 million in debt. Starting his career as a rapper, he now owns a very successful shoe line called Yeezy. This Yeezy line may be helping the hip-hop culture to connect with footwear in a way that hasn’t happened since the days of Air Jordans. That alone is a huge deal.
Kanye’s talent as a songwriter, musician, and designer now makes him one of the highest paid celebrities in the country. It’s only natural that he would want to give back to those less fortunate than himself.
Kanye’s passion for architecture
Kanye West has been vocal about his passion for architecture over the years. He started a company called Yeezy Home because he feels that “the world can be saved through design.”
He put out a call for industrial designers and architects to join him on this new project. While some have been skeptical about his architectural endeavors, there are those who feel that when musicians promote their involvement in any field, it improves diversity in the profession.
The inspiration for the homes on Tatooine originally came from the desert of Tunisia where Star Wars was shot on location. The housing complexes there are sunken into pits to keep them cool and cave-like.
West feels that some of the structures can be sunken into the ground with natural light coming in through the top. Others will stand close to 50 feet high.
The units will be prefabricated to help keep building costs down. There is no information yet as to when the project will be completed or when the units will be available for tenants.
Kanye’s low-income ‘Star Wars’ housing project
The Star Wars fan is noted to have said that the idea came after “studying dwellings from every period in time since man has been on Earth.” He then settled on the Tunisian set design for his prototype.
His hope is to help break down the barriers that separate social classes; the rich, the middle class, and the poor. Inspired by the movie, the prefabricated structures will have a similar look and feel to the homes in the movie, but will be huge.
They are being built on 300 acres of land in Calabasas, California, which Kanye purchased a few years ago. So far, the structures look like “skeletons of wooden spaceships.” Those who have been lucky enough to get a tour say they have an “otherworldly” feel.
