Why Jada and Will Smith Staged an Intervention for Jaden
If there’s one thing we know about the Smiths, it’s that they’re all about family. Whether they’re cheering each other on at events or sharing words of encouragement during a tough time, they really try to support each other to the fullest.
So, of course, when Jada and Will Smith noticed something strange about their son, Jaden, they reached out to help. Here’s what prompted them to stage an intervention for the “Icon” rapper.
Jada and Will Smith opened up in a new interview
On Sept. 23, the couple sat down for a chat on Jada’s Facebook Watch series, Red Table Talk, where they opened up about Jaden’s apparent health issues. They revealed that they became concerned about their son after he started losing weight and developed “dark circles” around his eyes due to his vegan diet.
“Will and I had a bit of an intervention with Jaden because he’s a vegan now, but we realized he wasn’t getting enough protein,” Jada told the panel, which also included Jaden and his siblings, Willow Smith and Trey Smith, and Jada’s mother, Adrienne Banfield-Jones.
“[Jaden] was wasting away,” she added. “He just looked drained and was just depleted. He wasn’t getting the nutrients.”
Will chimed in and pointed out even more changes to Jaden’s appearance, noting that his skin turned an odd color.
“There was even grayness to his skin,” he added. “We got really nervous.”
Jaden explained the reason for his changing appearance
The After Earth actor first corrected his parents, noting that he’s a vegetarian and not a vegan. Then he revealed that his appearance had changed so much because he’d only been eating one or two meals a day.
“I also just wanna say that I’m vegetarian. I’ve tried to be vegan,” he said. “I’ll go vegan for a week or so, but for the past year, I’ve been vegetarian.”
He continued, “I was just eating, like, two meals a day … maybe one. Maybe just that one big meal, and I’m like, ‘Oh, you know, I didn’t get around to it.'”
Luckily, Jaden has changed his eating habits and looks like his normal self.
“You’re definitely looking better now,” Will told his son.
Jaden’s sister previously opened up on the show about her own health struggles
Back in May of 2018, Willow told the panel that she used to harm herself following her breakout hit, “Whip My Hair,” which came out in 2010. She released the song at the age of 9.
“I honestly feel like I lost my sanity at one point,” she explained. “It was after that whole ‘Whip My Hair’ thing. I had just stopped doing singing lessons. I was kind of just in this gray area of, ‘Who am I? Do I have a purpose? Is there anything I can do besides this?’”
She continued, “After the tour and the promotion and all of that, they wanted me to finish my album. And I was like, ‘I’m not gonna do that.’ After all of that kind of settled down, I was listening to a lot of dark music. It was just so crazy. I was just plunged into this black hole. I was, like, cutting myself and doing crazy things.”
The revelation surprised Jada, prompting Willow to reveal the scars on her wrists and forearms.
“There’s still a little something there. Totally lost my sanity for a moment there,” Willow added. “I never talk about it because it was such a short, weird point in my life, but you have to pull yourself out of it.”
And that’s really just the brink of all that’s gone down on the show. You read more about it here.
