Why Jennifer Lopez Cried Over ‘Hustlers’ Reviews and a Possible Oscar Nomination

Jennifer Lopez might have just turned 50, but her career is arguably at its peak, proving to women across the globe that there’s no age cap for success. The hardworking singer’s latest project — Hustlers — is garnering major buzz.

The film provided Lopez with an opportunity to get back on the big screen in a whole new way: She plays a clever stripper who decides to rid some wealthy clients of extra funds. Although many dismissed the project as just another stripper movie, the reviews pouring in for Hustlers are quite good. And Lopez, in particular, has been receiving praise for her starring turn.

What is ‘Hustlers’ about?

Hustlers is based on a true story about a group of New York City strippers who get together to hustle their wealthy clients around the time of the 2008 financial crisis. Still, the film’s real focus, according to screenwriter Lorene Scafaria, is to present a unique look at gender roles and to empathetically and realistically portray real women who live out unique circumstances.

When Lopez got involved, cast in the lead role of Ramona, she decided to take her preparations to a whole other level. She went on an intense diet regimen, cutting out sugar and carbs in order to get her body in a lean condition.

She also took pole-dancing lessons, which, according to Lopez, was one of the hardest things that she’s ever done. Lopez even admitted that her back and shoulders are “still recovering” as a result of the hard work that she put in. Finally, the actress met with real strippers in New York, learning their stories and discovering how to best represent them onscreen.

Has Jennifer Lopez ever won an Oscar?

Lopez’s work in Hustlers is hardly the first time she’s gone through serious transformation for a role, though it could be the most intense. Lopez has appeared in a wide variety of films over the years, beginning with her big breakout role in Selena, where she played the iconic singer who was killed at the peak of her fame.

Still, she has been best-known as a queen of light romantic comedies: Maid in Manhattan, Monster-in-Law, and The Wedding Planner. After a hiatus of several years from the big-screen, Lopez returned to films in 2018 with another romantic comedy: Second Act. While fans loved seeing Lopez in movies again, it wasn’t until her role in Hustlers that she started getting some serious recognition for her acting chops. Thus far, Lopez has not earned an Academy Award.

Will Jennifer Lopez win an award for ‘Hustlers’?

Hustlers released on September 13th, but the reviews are already in: Lopez is not to be missed. The Hollywood Reporter claims that Lopez deliverers her “best performance to date” in the film, and many critics are already clamoring for Lopez to be nominated for an Academy Award. All the buzz isn’t lost on Lopez, who recently opened up to Hoda Kotb about the positive reviews.

Lopez started tearing up when Kotb read some of the reviews for Hustlers and said that the recognition was “nice” since she has been working so hard her whole life. She apologized for being emotional before going on to explain that even being in that conversation about awards is “amazing.”

While the Academy Award nominations won’t be announced for several months yet, it seems as though Lopez definitely has a solid chance of being included in the nominees, and possibly even taking home that coveted golden statue.
