Why Kate Middleton and Camilla Parker Bowles Weren’t at the Queen’s Family Meeting Regarding Megxit

By now, news of Prince Harry and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex’s desire to step down from their positions as senior royals has traveled all around the world. While they aren’t the first to step back from their positions as royals, they are the first to want to keep one foot in the door.

Harry and Meghan don’t want to renounce or give up their titles, rather they want to be more financially independent. They want to earn their own money and then be paid when they work for the Queen.

As this is unprecedented, Queen Elizabeth II held a meeting with Prince Charles, Prince William, and Prince Harry to discuss the Sussexes role in the future.

Meghan, who was in Canada, at the time of the meeting, was invited to call into the discussion, but Katherine, Duchess of Cambridge, and her mother-in-law, Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, were not invited.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s announcement

Harry and Meghan announced their change in positions on Instagram.

“After many months of reflection and internal discussions, we have chosen to make a transition this year in starting to carve out a progressive new role within this institution,” the pair wrote. “We intend to step back as ‘senior’ members of the Royal Family and work to become financially independent, while continuing to fully support Her Majesty The Queen. It is with your encouragement, particularly over the last few years, that we feel prepared to make this adjustment.”

In addition to changing their roles, the pair also announced that they plan on splitting their time between North America and the U.K.

The result of the meeting

The Queen met with Prince Charles, Prince William, and Prince Harry for two and a half hours at her home in Sandringham, Norfolk.

“Today my family had very constructive discussions on the future of my grandson and his family,” the Queen said in a statement. “My family and I are entirely supportive of Harry and Meghan’s desire to create a new life as a young family. Although we would have preferred them to remain full-time working Members of the Royal Family, we respect and understand their wish to live a more independent life as a family while remaining a valued part of my family.”

“Harry and Meghan have made clear that they do not want to be reliant on public funds in their new lives. It has therefore been agreed that there will be a period of transition in which the Sussexes will spend time in Canada and the UK. These are complex matters for my family to resolve, and there is some more work to be done, but I have asked for final decisions to be reached in the coming days.”

Why weren’t Kate Middleton and Camilla Parker-Bowles invited?

The meeting was limited to the heads of each family, the ones who are actually in line to take the throne. So, there was no need for Kate or Camilla to be there. Meghan was invited to phone in because the decision directly affected her. She ultimately did not join the meeting, though.
