Why Kate Middleton Wants to Dress More ‘Edgy’ and ‘Modern’
From pleated blouses to crisp coat dresses, Kate Middleton is known for her uber-chic style. But lately, she’s started to experiment with bolder and modern garments — like on July 6, when she dazzled in bright colors at baby Archie Harrison’s christening.
A new report says the switch is intentional, too. According to People, the Duchess of Cambridge believed she needed a makeover a few months back and decided to change her style.
Why she wants to dress edgier
It’s simple: The duchess reportedly wants to keep up with current fashion trends. “Kate felt like she was in a bit of a style rut and thought she needed a little edge,” an insider told the publication. “She’s consciously worked on getting her look to be a bit younger and more modern, and it’s worked!”
The insider continued, “She looks amazing, and she is getting lots of compliments about it.”
Middleton reportedly turned to her longtime assistant and stylist, Natasha Archer, for help with the new look.
Get a load of the duchess’ new style
If you’ve been paying attention over the summer, you’re probably aware of all of Middleton’s new looks. As Harper’s Bazaar points out, she’s been wearing more “handle bags, velvet hair bows, and padded headbands.” She’s also experimented with more detailed garments, like dresses with puffy sleeves or polka dots.
Middleton made headlines on July 6 at baby Archie’s christening, where she sported a pink Stella McCartney dress. People notes that she had previously worn the dress to the 2018 Christmas lunch at Buckingham Palace. However, she livened up the look by adding bright accessories, including a red headband with matching shoes.
She also wore a pair of dangling earrings that once belonged to the late Princess Diana. But she received criticism over that decision. Some fans believed she should have given the jewels to Meghan Markle for baby Archie’s big day.
Days before that, she attended Wimbledon, donning a white dress with large buttons. Her accessories? An adorable Alexander McQueen belt, and chic sunglasses. But she didn’t ditch her staple look completely. Like usual, she wore a gorgeous blow-out.
Where she gets fashion advice
So, Archer isn’t the only one helping the duchess with her look. According to AOL, Queen Elizabeth II also gives Middleton fashion advice now that she’s in line to be queen.
In order to ensure that she looks the part, “The queen is regularly, allegedly, giving notes if she doesn’t like a certain hem or a certain outfit on Kate, or certain [color] tights.”
Her style has come a long way
Before Middleton married Prince William, she wore outfits that were much too casual for any member of the royal family. Her wardrobe included a denim mini skirt with a leather jacket and knee-high leather boots and a lace tank top with low-rise jeans that showed her belly.
It seems like those days are behind Middleton, but they say fashion repeats itself, so you never really know.
