Why Kelly Ripa Won’t Go Keto

Talk show host Kelly Ripa is clearly on top of nutrition and fitness. Known for taking on tough workouts and always looking in exceptional shape, Ripa sometimes discusses her latest exercise regimen on her show Live With Kelly and Ryan.

Yet despite Ripa being up on the latest fitness crazes and food fetishes, the talk show host revealed show will not be going keto any time soon.

Jumpstarting her day

Hosting a daily morning talk show can mean not getting a ton of shut eye. Ripa is no stranger to having to rise and shine early. “I wake up around 5:30 or 6 o’clock in the morning and start thinking of stories for our Host Chat segment that day,” she told The Cut in January. “The silly, mundane, ridiculous stories like ‘You should have three cups of coffee a day to make you live longer!'”

Speaking of caffeinated beverages, Ripa has a special blend she swears by. “I make a ‘Bullet Coffee’ at home in the morning — it’s coffee, two shots of espresso and a tablespoon of ghee and then a packet of collagen powder,” she shared. “Ryan’s girlfriend got me hooked on it and I just sort of believe that if I drink it every day, my hair will be as thick as hers. Then I blend it all together and have this frosty thick beverage.”

Since she has to be to work by 8 a.m., Ripa supplements her Bullet concoction with some Starbucks. “I have a Starbucks latte when I get to Live. Then I will have a half a coffee after the show wraps,” she revealed. “I have a great energy level. I don’t nap, and I fear that if I did nap it would probably make me stay awake all night.”

Aiming for that target heart rate

When it comes to her workouts, Ripa is always ready to bring it. Welcoming new routines that are a challenge, the talk show host strives to push herself to keep fit though in her opinion, her physique seldom changes.

“I was talking to a cardiologist and he said to make sure your heart beats out of your chest every day,” she shared. “The more you exercise, the healthier it is. And I can be honest: My body looks like Peter Pan no matter what I do.”

Ripa sticks to workouts she enjoys while keeping her in shape. “I’ve never been a va-va-voom woman,” the former soap star revealed. “I like to take AKT — which is cardio-based dance classes — about four to five days a week between 3 and 5 p.m. And I like to do SoulCycle on the weekends. In the summer, I like to run in Central Park because I think it’s so gorgeous.”

No to Keto

The former All My Children actress also keeps her energy going with healthy snacks. “I do enjoy keeping nuts around me at all times, and I don’t just mean the people in my life,” she joked. “I mean almonds and cashews, and I do like dried fruit. I know people will say, ‘Oh, that’s the jellybean of the healthy snack world,’ but for me, dried apricots and cherries are better than candy. I know it has as much sugar, but I just enjoy it.”

When it comes to nutrition, Ripa isn’t one for fads. While the keto diet has been a go-to for many top celebs including Halle Berry, Al Roker, and Gwyneth Paltrow, Ripa isn’t wild about the idea of cutting out her carbs.

“My husband [Mark Consuelos] has gone full keto, which I don’t mind telling you is something I could never do,” she said, according to Bon Appetit Healthyish. “I just don’t have that level of discipline. Mark says that I’m carb-o, because I always eat his bun if he gets a burger. And the fries.”

She qualifies her decision-making with simple logic. “But you know, I work out, so I feel like I’m allowed,” Ripa declared. “I’m entitled, and I’m eating whatever I want to eat.”
