Why Khal Drogo Might Be Returning to ‘Game of Thrones’ Season 8

Even though Khal Drogo died in season one, he is far from forgotten. The character, played by Jason Momoa, is a favorite among Game of Thrones fans. Maybe it’s because he’s drop-dead gorgeous, or perhaps it’s the sweet way he learned to love Daenerys — despite first putting her through horrors — but fans can’t seem to get enough of him. There are even a bunch of rumors flying around the Internet that he could return to the show in season eight. Let’s take a look at some of those theories, and discuss the most plausible ideas.

SPOILER ALERT: If you’re not caught up on the most recent episodes, you may not want to read ahead, until you are.

Jason Momoa was on the ‘Game of Thrones’ set recently

Momoa recently shared several photos to his Instagram account that show him hanging out with Game of Thrones cast members in Ireland, at what appears to be a wrap party. He wrote: “I’m so grateful to be a part of the greatest show on earth. I’m honoured to be able to come to Ireland and celebrate with my friends. I’m just here for kisses and hugs and the black stuff. Mahalo David and Dan you are legends. Congrats to the talented crew and cast. Aloha J.”

Did Mamoa go to Ireland just to hang out with the cast, or could he have been there filming a scene? And does that mean his character is returning, or could he just be featured in a dream or flashback? The Instagram post sure has fans excited at the possibility.

Jason Momoa has a new look

The hunky actor decided to shave his iconic facial hair about the same time Game of Thrones filming wrapped. Why did he keep his beard this entire time, only to shave it off now? The beard is an essential aspect of Khal Drogo’s character. We can’t imagine him without it. Was Momoa keeping the beard to film another scene as Drogo for season eight, and now that filming has wrapped, he’s free to shave? It could be for that reason, or it could merely be a coincidence. The actor has said he did it for charity, but could it link to an appearance?

Will Khal Drogo return as a White Walker?

One theory put forth by fans suggests Khal Drogo will return as a White Walker. He is dead, after falling ill from an infection in season one, and the White Walkers appear to be some kind of reanimated corpses. So, does this mean it’s possible that Drogo could return?

This theory was recently debunked after the Battle of Winterfell. The battle ended with the death of the Night King — expertly maneuvered by Arya Stark — and with his demise came the end to all White Walkers. As such, the prospect of Khal Drogo returning as a zombie is one that is off the table.

Is Khal Drogo reincarnated into Drogon?

Before we learned that Jon Snow is Daenerys’ nephew, the two shared a kiss. Fans noted that during this scene, the dragon, Drogon — who is named after Khal Drogo — gave Snow a weird look, almost like he was jealous or protective. This prompted a lively discussion on Twitter about the possibility that Drogon could actually be Drogo himself, reincarnated as a dragon.

Another variation on this theory is that Drogo never actually died, and instead, his spirit was positioned inside the dragon, Drogon. This would mean that in season one, only Drogo’s body perished, and not his soul. If either one of these theories is correct, we’re a little disappointed that Momoa may not need to make an appearance. It may just be the CGI dragon we see from now on.

What does Jason Mamoa think about Khal Drogo returning?

During an interview with Entertainment Weekly’s Sirius XM show, Momoa said: “HE’S DEAD. I think I’m the only character in history to be dead for nine years and everyone still be like wanting. I love you, but he’s dead.”

Disappointing words for Khal Drogo fans. Still, many assume he could have been trying to throw fans off course. And that’s possible, Game of Thrones actors are on strict limitations about they can say, so as not to release spoilers.

The only way to know for sure if Khal Drogo will return, is to keep watching Game of Thrones. New episodes air Sundays on HBO.
