Why ‘Long Island Medium’ Theresa Caputo Said She Was Terrified of Communicating With the Dead
TLC is home to many of our absolute favorite reality TV stars — and Theresa Caputo has captured our hearts for years. The Long Island Medium star is feisty, funny, and totally candid with her audience, and that’s without mentioning her very special gift of communicating with the dead. For years, we’ve watched Theresa approach strangers on the street just to tell them that spirit was looking out for them, and there’s no doubt she changed those people forever.
Many fans have one question on their mind: Does Theresa actually like being in contact with spirit? While she’s certainly learned to accept her gift, it seems it was actually terrifying to her in the beginning of her journey. Here’s what she said.
Theresa first started hearing spirit when she was 4 years old
While Theresa may not have known what was contacting her when she was a child, she did know something was amiss as early as 4 years old. On her personal website, she explains that she heard spirit as a child — and as she aged, it started to get in the way of living. She sought out therapy in her 20s to try and figure out what was wrong with her, but to no avail. Finally, her mother had her go to a spiritual healer for help — and it was through this teacher, Pat Longo, that Theresa was finally able to understand her gift.
As for what spirit feels like, Theresa wrote that it “speaks to me through a sixth sense — a kind of feeling and knowing.” She also added that it’s incredibly difficult to describe how she experiences this phenomenon “because I see, hear, and feel things differently than we do in the physical world.” Theresa also doesn’t pay skeptics any mind, as she knows she’s the real deal and doesn’t have to prove herself to anyone in order to help others.
Feeling spirit resulted in many anxiety attacks for Theresa
Theresa went even more in-depth with how much anxiety her gift brought her in her younger years with People. She told the publication that no matter how many doctors or therapists she would seek, they could never come up with a logical explanation for her feelings. Theresa also mentioned that by the time she met her ex-husband Larry when she was 17, she would start screaming “bloodcurdling screams, like a crazy person” when she was in the car with him.
Larry also spoke to People about the attacks. And while he said they were incredibly alarming at first, it happened with more frequency over time, and he loved Theresa enough to not let it come between them. “I wasn’t going to break up with her because she has this issue. I felt like I was her anchor in those moments,” he said. Larry did note that if others were in the car with him and Theresa, her panic attacks would terrify others, which was embarrassing for him. Even so, he never gave up trying — and eventually, Theresa was able to reign in her gift.
She has learned to embrace her gift to help others
It may have led to some seriously uncomfortable panic attacks and great anxiety, but all in all, Theresa is happy that she can use her powerful gift to help others. And she also mentioned to People that she’s learned to disengage from spirit when necessary, which has really helped her stay stable. “I’ll just say to myself, ‘Be gone you and out of me,’ and that means that I’m letting the spirit know that I know it’s present, but that I’m not channeling with it right now,” she added.
While she mentioned on her website that her job’s not easy, she loves that her ability can bring “comfort and joy” to others when she is in channeling spirit mode. “My wish for everyone I meet is that Spirit gives them a message that brings them the most peace at that moment,” she wrote.
