Why Meghan Markle Once ‘Couldn’t Wear’ an Engagement Ring

Meghan Markle, Duchess of Sussex, once had to take off an engagement ring (Who has the more expensive engagement ring? Kate Middleton, Duchess of Cambridge, or Markle? Find out here.) she’d been wearing before stepping out in public, according to her former Suits co-star and TV dad, Wendell Pierce.

According to Express during an in-studio interview with KTLA 5, the 55-year-old actor who played Robert Zane, father to Markle’s character, Rachel Zane, recalled a moment on set when he realized his TV daughter’s real-life relationship with Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex, had become serious.

“I didn’t think it was happening and then one day, on the set, there was an MI5 guy,” he explained before adding, “There was this MI5 guy on set so I said, ‘well, this must be serious.’ They sent someone over.”

Security detail asked for ring

Pierce remembered a particular incident when Markle had to remove an engagement ring she’d been wearing as a prop. Her character and Mike Ross (Patrick J. Adams) finally got married in Season 7 before both actors left the show.

At that point, Prince Harry and Markle weren’t engaged. But she had been playing a soon-to-be-married woman on Suits shooting scenes wearing a prop engagement ring.

Pierce told the news outlet about a particular moment when Markle’s security detail asked her to remove the fake diamond sparkler.

“Then one time, we were doing a scene before they got engaged where she was engaged with Mike on the show and they said, ‘Wait, don’t get out of the car’.”

He continued, saying, “They said, ‘Give us the ring because there’s a paparazzi down the street.’ And if the photo got out with the ring…” it’d most certainly cause a frenzy.

Imagine Prince Harry and Markle releasing a statement insisting they weren’t engaged, that Markle had been wearing a fake ring as part of a scene in Suits. It would’ve been laughable but also a headache for the royal couple.

After lots of speculation, Prince Harry and Markle announced their engagement on Nov. 27, 2017.

They stepped out for a photoshoot at Kensington Palace’s Sunken Garden — learn more about the location here — and then sat down with the BBC for their first-ever joint interview during which they discussed how they met, if and when they wanted to have kids, and more.

Pierce wanted to tell Prince Harry not to ‘break her heart’

Also during the interview, Pierce said Prince Harry once visited the set of Suits, which had been filming in Toronto. He said when the royal showed up on set he wanted to tell him to be kind to Markle but he never got the chance.

“He came to set one time, the prince – I didn’t get the chance to see him,” Pierce said. “But I was ready to tell him, as the TV dad, ‘you know, you break her heart’ – I was really going to say that but then I didn’t get the chance,” he added.

During the premiere episode of the ninth and final season of Suits, Mike returned to the show and made a brief shoutout to his TV wife and former co-star. Harvey Specter (Gabriel Macht) asked Mike how Rachel was doing to which Mike said she’d been doing really good.

Season 9 of Suits airs Wednesday nights at 9 p.m. EST on USA.
