Why Meghan Markle and Princess Diana Might Have Had a ‘Tricky Relationship’
Prince Harry once declared that his late mother, Princess Diana, and his wife, Meghan Markle, would be “thick as thieves,” but one royal expert isn’t so sure that would be the case. In fact, she believes that the women “might have had a tricky relationship.”
Would Princess Diana have liked Markle?
It’s impossible to know for sure what kind of relationship Princess Diana and Markle would have had, since the Princess of Wales tragically died in 1997. Those in the know about Diana’s personality, however, can draw some conclusions about how the women would have gotten along.
Author and editor-in-chief of Majesty magazine, Ingrid Seward, thinks that things might have been “tricky” with the women, as she believes that Diana wouldn’t like the way that Markle seems to have “control” over Harry.
Seward explained to the Daily Mail: “Diana was actually quite snobbish. She was very proud of her Spencer heritage, and although she was great with the ordinary man, she might not have wanted someone for her son who had been married before and was from such a different background.”
She continued, noting that Diana “certainly wouldn’t have liked the control that Meghan has over Harry, so I think they might have had a tricky relationship.”
That being said, Seward does think they would have likely been friendly, sharing, “I’m sure she would have liked Kate and Meghan, although she wouldn’t have shown it if she didn’t.”
Diana may have taken interest in Markle’s family drama
Seward also believes that Princess Diana would have been interested in Markle’s estranged relationship with her father, Thomas, since the princess had such a close relationship with her sons.
She noted: “[Diana] would have been fascinated by the dynamics between Thomas Markle and his daughter. She would have wanted to know all the details of their relationship and why it went wrong.”
Diana would have something in common with Markle
Former royal protection officer Ken Wharfe believes Diana would have liked Markle and defended her against criticism, sharing: “Diana would have liked that her son had married an American divorcee, a woman of mixed heritage. I can see Diana putting two fingers up to the monarchy on the strength of that one, saying: ‘This is fantastic, this is the future of this family, this is the way it has to be.’”
Wharfe also spoke of the way the two women had an ease with the public, noting that Markle’s background as an actress gives her an advantage when speaking, saying that she’s “brilliant in dealing with the media and talking to people with a sincerity in her voice.”
He continued, “Diana would have liked that. I don’t see that there would have been any jealousy on Diana’s part. Diana had taken some time to achieve that high performance level, but that all came as a result of hard work.”
Prince Harry weighed in
Prince Harry spoke about his mom and his then wife-to-be in a BBC interview following the news of his engagement to Markle in 2017.
He stated that his late mother would be “thick as thieves, without question” with Markle, adding, “I think she would be over the moon, jumping up and down, so excited for me. But then, as I said, [she] would’ve probably been best friends with Meghan.”
