Why Meghan Markle Will Ultimately Win the Hearts of British Women

Meghan Markle has had a rough start in the royal family. Despite being a new mother and working hard, it seems like she can never please anyone and everything she does gets harshly criticized. It got to the point where she and Prince Harry are suing a newspaper for constantly defaming her.

However, while life seems very bad for the Duchess of Sussex at the moment, it might not actually stay this way for long. In fact, it’s possible that Markle will become very popular with British women in the future.

Although Markle gets talked about a lot in the press, it does not mean that she is well-liked by the public. According to some polls, she is actually one of the least popular women in the royal family, just after Camilla Parker Bowles.

Meanwhile, Kate Middleton and Queen Elizabeth are extremely well-liked by British people. Both of them have approval ratings of over 60 percent.

It’s not clear exactly why many people do not like Duchess Meghan. However, the answer could lie in the negative press she has been receiving day after day. Moreover, she is different from other women who have married into the royal family. Being a biracial American divorcee has definitely made her stand out and given critics prejudicial reasons to say that she does not belong with other royals.

This morning, The Duchess of Sussex went back to college!  Joining students and educators at The University of Johannesburg The Duchess was able to announce a new series of gender grants from the Association of Commonwealth Universities, of which she is patron. She was also able to announce four new scholarships to help students study in different commonwealth countries, allowing cross cultural understanding and an opportunity to deepen their educational studies abroad. One of the recipients of these grants shared his story of growing up on farmland in Kenya, where he paid for his education trading vegetables to cover schooling costs (cauliflower leaves to be exact!) He is now doing a research study on carcinogens in his country, its link to cancer – his work is helping to change practices and to save lives. The Duchess was so moved by the work being done across the education sector and to talk with such like-minded thinkers about the importance of access to education and the support needed internally. When the round table discussion this morning moved to the challenges faced in this sector and how daunting it can all seem, The Duchess said, “Sometimes access to education can seem so big, you wonder where to even begin? So you begin with one student, or one school, you simply begin. And that’s when we see change.” She continued by referencing a Martin Luther King Jr quote: “Take the first step… you don’t have to see the whole staircase, just take the first step.” Since @the_acu_official Gender Grants were launch in 2016, 28 universities in 17 countries have benefited with a minimum of 600 beneficiaries participating in workshops supported by the grants. #RoyalVisitSouthAfrica Photo ©️ PA images

Markle may not be popular now, but according to former newspaper editor Eve Pollard, she will be liked by women in the future if she continues doing some good things that she is already doing.

For example, Markle is a dedicated humanitarian. Before she even became royal, she was already working a lot with charity organizations that fought for women’s rights. As the Duchess of Sussex, Markle is continuing this work. Pollard believes that this is where Markle can win points with British women.

“The causes she espouses are all the causes that every woman would agree with,” Pollard said. “I think that in the end that will prove to be the thing that makes her stand out, the thing that separates her.”

Meghan Markle will probably not receive much attention in the future

Pollard also believes that Markle is only receiving a lot of attention and criticism now because she is the “new girl” and is quite different from everyone else around her.

“Meghan herself, I would imagine, must have found it quite difficult to fit into this very large family, with very old traditions, and she and Prince Harry are doing things differently,” she said. “Well, doing things differently means that you can get criticised and they have been.”

However, with time, the critics will lay off on her, Pollard shares, especially when someone else new and exciting joins the royal family:

“There’ll be a new girl along sometime and they’ll get a lot of attraction and attention,” Pollard said. “This always happens to the royal family – people are fascinated by the new glamorous entrants. It’ll quieten down eventually.”

It’s also important to note that Markle married Prince Harry, who is currently sixth in line to the throne. This means that he has a very slim chance of becoming king, especially when Prince William’s children grow up and start families of their own. If history is anything to go by, it is very much possible that, later on, Markle will seem less exciting to the public as they focus their attention on Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis.

Since Markle is raising her son, Archie, away from the public eye, this will make sure that her family attracts even less attention (and criticism) in the future.
