Why Ncuti Gatwa Didn’t Want to Play The Gay Best Friend on Netflix’s ‘Sex Education’

Netflix has been pumping out the hits lately.

One of it’s latest additions is teen drama/comedy Sex Education. The British show follows awkward teen Otis as he becomes a sex therapist for the rest of his classmates.

While Otis may be the main character in the series, anyone who has watched the show knows that the true star of the show is Otis’ best friend Eric played by Ncuti Gatwa.

Gatwa’s character is one of two gay guys at the boys’ school. Throughout the season, we are given a look at Eric’s struggles with accepting himself while trying to fit in both at school and at home with his religious parents.

Eric’s storyline is both enthralling and emotional.

Though the character turned out to be a winner, Gatwa was originally a little nervous about the part.

“I’m so happy that Laurie really took the time to develop him into his own person,” he said to Vulture of the show’s creator, Laurie Nunn. ” There is always a danger of making him a stock character because he’s black and Otis is his best friend. He’s also gay and Otis is his best friend. Those are two avenues whereby you could just make him comic relief. But he’s so much more than that. We see him struggle with his religion, parents, and heritage and, obviously, his sexuality, and accepting all those things about himself.”

If Eric’s character seemed really authentic, it’s probably because Gatwa could really relate to him.

“Because I come from a religious background and an African one as well — my parents are Rwandan — I infused him with what I felt was needing to be infused, like the things that he says and the way he says them,” he said. “But it comes from the writers first and foremost, which is great because our writer’s room is predominately female. A lot of people have been talking about how fresh the show is and I personally think that comes from having a female writing room. We’re able to push the characters a bit further than what we’ve traditionally seen.”

Who is Ncuti Gatwa?

The 26-year-old breakout actor was born in Britain. He grew up in Edinburgh, Scotland and is the child of Rwandan parents.

Before landing a role on Sex Education, Gatwa mostly performed in theatre productions. He was a part of several major productions. He even appeared as Demetrius in A Midsummer Night’s Dream at Shakespeare’s Globe in London.

He also played a role in the miniseries Stonemouth, as well as the mini-series Bob Servant.

Will There be a Season 2?

Fans of Sex Education have already been wondering whether the show will get a second season or not. According to Vulture, scripts for the second season of the show are already in the works. However, there hasn’t been any concrete news released about whether the show will be returning to Netflix for another season.

As far as Gatwa is concerned, regardless of whether Sex Education gets another season or not, we doubt this will be the last that we will see of the promising actor.
