Why Nick Jonas Was Afraid His Brothers Would Never Speak to Him Again

2019 has been the year of the Jonas Brothers. After a lengthy hiatus, starting in 2013, the brothers reunited and began releasing new music.

For many of us JoBro fans, this is a time that we thought would never come. And it seems like the brothers are closer now than ever. They have supported each other through two weddings, the birth of Kevin’s two children, and more.

When the brothers are together and smiling and telling stories of their youth, like they often do now, it’s hard to remember why they even broke up in the first place.

Why did the Jonas Brothers break up?

The Jonas Brothers had a wild run. From the moment they stepped onto the scene, young girls everywhere were obsessed with them. But after the Disney movies started to dry up and their fans began to grow up, Nick wondered if there was a future for him and his brothers.

“To call it creative differences is almost too simple,” Nick says in an upcoming episode of CBS This Morning. “And I think a lot of people lost the appetite for what we were putting into the world. So, you know, we were putting up shows that weren’t selling. We were making music that I don’t think we were all super proud of, and it wasn’t connected.”

How did Kevin and Joe react to the breakup?

Fearing that the band was coming to the end of its road, Nick had a conversation with his brothers.

“So I had a very tough conversation with them where I laid it out for them,” he continues. “I said, ‘You know, I feel like the Jonas Brothers should be no more, and we should go on individual journeys.’ And it didn’t go so well.”

His brothers didn’t agree and at the time, Nick felt that he had just caused a rift in their relationship that was so big that they might not ever be able to come back from it.

“I feared that, you know, we – they would never speak to me again,” he says.

“It was not, ‘My heart’s not in it, and I want to be real with you as band members and brothers,'” Joe said of the conversation in the new documentary, Chasing Happiness. “It was, ‘The band is over. I want to go do stuff without you guys and I’ve made up my mind.’”

“I felt betrayed, I felt lied to, I felt angry, numb,” he continued. “What hurt the most was that it came from Nick because he is my best friend.”

What brought The Jonas Brothers back together?

After nearly six years apart, fans had almost given up on the idea of a Jonas Brothers reunion. But after starting to hang out more, the brothers began to feel that spark that they had been missing.

“It definitely wasn’t one conversation, it was many,” Nick said on Morning Mashup of why the band got back together. “We started spending a lot of time together and we all kind of felt that there was a magic and there is a magic when we’re together that we missed.”

“We felt like we wanted to feel that magic again, so we talked about it and after a few conversations and a bit of healing that needed to be done with us as family, we all came to the decision to do this again,” he continued. “We got in the studio and that magic that we spoke about, we felt it again.”
