Why Nicki Minaj’s Friends Are ‘Wary’ of Her Relationship With Husband Kenneth ‘Zoo’ Petty
Nicki Minaj is officially off the market. On Oct. 21, she married her boyfriend Kenneth Petty, whom she began dating in December of 2018.
The “MEGATRON” rapper broke the news on Instagram, sharing a video that features matching “Mr. and Mrs.” mugs, and “Bride” and “Groom” hats.
“Onika Tanya Maraj-Petty 10•21•19,” she captioned the post with a bride and groom emoji, seemingly referencing her new name and apparent wedding date.
Fans could not be happier that Minaj has found true love. But some people aren’t so thrilled — including her friends, allegedly. According to Us Weekly
The controversy surrounding Kenneth Petty
Petty served time in prison after being convicted of attempted rape in 1995. He was 16 at the time. According to arrest records, he used a knife or a cutting instrument during the act, which happened the previous year. As a result, he is a registered, Level 2 sex offender in New York. It was determined that he had a medium risk of committing another offense.
In addition to the rape charge, Petty has been arrested more than 10 times for crimes ranging from driving with a suspended license to manslaughter.
Fans have long expressed concern about his criminal past. However, Minaj has shut them down. She’s known him since they were teenagers and reportedly believes that he has changed.
Plus, she’s head-over-heels for him. She’s made it clear that she’s met her match, affectionately calling Petty the Ken to her Barbie.
More on Minaj and Petty’s surprise wedding
As of writing, these two have not said much about tying the knot. However, Minaj said in August that they’d obtained a marriage license and had plans to marry in “about 80 days.”
She later told E! News in an interview published on Oct. 16 that she could get married within a week, explaining, “We’ve gotten our marriage license, but there’s a particular pastor who I want to officiate and so she was just made available as of today. She told me she’s available within the next week, so we could be married in the next seven days.”
But she declared that they would not have a big ceremony — at least not any time soon.
“You know when you’re a little girl and you want this big beautiful wedding, and I used to think I was one of those girls. I always wanted the fairytale. But then the things that used to matter to you don’t matter as much because I remember wanting those things with people, where real love wasn’t there,” she explained to The Shade Room in an interview published on Oct. 20.
“So now I feel like everything has finally lined up and matched up being that I’m madly in love with this man,” Minaj continued. “He’s also my best friend. The things that used to matter to me before don’t matter as much now. So yes, we’re going to have a big wedding eventually.”
Will Minaj and Petty have children?
It seems like they’ll definitely start a family. Minaj has repeatedly said that she wants to have children once she’s married.
“If I’m done with my fifth album and I don’t have a child by then, no matter how much money I have, I would be disappointed, as a woman, because I feel like I was put here to be a mother,” she told Complex in December of 2014. (Minaj released her fourth studio album, Queen, in 2018.)
“I have definitely put off the wife thing because I don’t want people in my business. I’d rather not do anything that’s going to be on paper but I definitely will be married before I have my baby. I want to make sure I do it in that order,” Minaj continued. “I’ve always felt like that since I was young; my mother always put that in my head. By the fifth album, I will have walked down the aisle and I will at least be on baby No. 1, possibly baby No. 2. And have $500 million.”
She also announced on Sept. 5 that she was retiring so that she and Petty could start a family.
With that in mind, we hope her friends will get on board soon because it sounds like Petty is here to stay.
