Why Oprah Says She’s ‘Proud’ of Meghan Markle’s Birth Plan

It’s never a bad thing to have Oprah Winfrey in your corner and it turns out she’s a big fan of Meghan Markle. While Markle faces plenty of criticism daily, Oprah clearly has her back, recently remarking how she’s “proud” of the way the duchess is handling pregnancy and breaking traditions, including her decision not to pose for pictures right after having a baby.

Meghan Markle is shaking things up and Oprah is here for it

During an interview with ET at The Hollywood Reporter’s Empowerment in Entertainment Gala, Oprah was asked about Markle’s birth plan and it was nothing but high praise from Winfrey.

Winfrey noted, “Oh my God! I’m so proud of her decisions. To be able to stand up and say this is what I really want for my baby and my family and now I’m going to do it a different way when it’s been done that way for a thousand years? I’m just so proud of her.”

Oprah defended her royal pal

Winfrey went on to discuss how Markle is bold and that she is impressed with the duchess’ desire to “stand [up for] what works for her and Harry, and what is the truth for them, how they want to raise their baby.”

She added that Markle’s approach is refreshing for other moms, explaining: “I think it does a lot for all the women who are trying to keep up [with the pressure put on new moms].”

Winfrey addresses Markle’s decision not to pose for photos

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have made it all too clear that they won’t be posing for the traditional photo on the steps of the hospital shortly after giving birth, even though Princess Diana and Kate Middleton both did just that.

Instead, the couple is breaking with tradition and Oprah said she totally respects that decision. She told ET: “Who is ready to walk out and stand before the world and put that face on, you know, a day after you’ve had a baby? So I think for her and him — I’m sure it was a mutual decision for the two of them — I think it’s a great thing.”

She added, in true Oprah style, “And truthfully, it ain’t nobody else’s business! That’s really the truth.”

Oprah defended Markle: she’s been ‘portrayed unfairly’

This isn’t the first time that Oprah has been in Markle’s corner, telling her BFF Gayle King, on CBS This Morning earlier this month: “I think she’s being portrayed unfairly.” She added, “I feel that if people really knew her they would know that she is not only everything we perceive of her, in being graceful and dynamic in holding that position, but she just has a wonderful, warm, giving, loving heart. I think it’s very unfair.”

King agreed, adding, “She’s very kind. She doesn’t seem to buy into [her bad press] though.”

Winfrey responded: “I think that’s remarkable that despite everything that’s going on she does not read anything.”
