Why Paul Rudd Said Filming ‘Avengers: Endgame’ Was Like When He Joined ‘Friends’

Back in the day, Paul Rudd joined a mega-popular series — a little TV show called Friends, playing Phoebe’s boyfriend, Mike Hannigan. It turns out that joining the Marvel Universe and filming Avengers: Endgame was not unlike his time on the sitcom.

Paul Rudd has been the ‘new kid’ in an established group before

In an interview with ET, Rudd was asked about his experience joining the Avengers as Ant-Man and he compared it to joining Friends in season nine.

He explained: “It’s the one experience I could say felt a little similar, where I kind of join this group… even though I used ‘join’ in quotes — it was like, I get to act in scenes with some iconic characters and actors in the Avengers and it felt a little bit like that, where I came onto Friends, and it was season nine.”

He added: “It was certainly massive for me,” noting, “I had never been a part of anything that had that kind of viewership. Everybody was very nice, but I never could quite get over the fact that I was sitting in Central Perk, and I just really didn’t want to get in the way.”

Given that his new character was among the Friends cast that fans had followed for years, he said, “I knew no one was tuning in for Mike Hannigan, so I was like, ‘Oh wow, I’m just going to sit back and kind of observe and enjoy this ride.”

The Avengers team is a ‘group of amazing human beings’

Coming in to join the Avengers for Rudd and Brie Larson, who is a new addition as Captain Marvel, was not a tough transition because, as Jeremy Renner (Hawkeye) explained, “I think it’s a pretty kickass group, to be honest with you.”

He continued: “I mean, there’s not a better group of people you want to just be around, from top to bottom, just from the grass on down, and all the creators and all the talent involved. [It’s a] really, really good solid group of amazing human beings.”

Rudd said of Larson, “Brie is so, so cool. Not just her character, but who she is kind of handling the situation. [She] kind of stepped into everything pretty easily, I think.”

Renner added: “She’s not gonna be intimidated by [Chris Hemsworth]. She’s strong.”

Brie Larson gives her take on joining the Avengers

When Larson was asked “what was it like joining this crew?,” she shared how it was “intimidating at first, mostly because this is where it all began for me was on this film. We filmed this before Captain Marvel, but it was a good group of people to figure it out with.”

Don Cheadle (War Machine) was asked what it’s like when someone new comes in — is there an initiation period? “There was definitely a hazing period,” he explained, sharing, and it’s good because we get to play with that in the scene itself when she shows up.” He added, “she kind of fit right in, she paid her dues on time, $25.” Unfortunately, Larson is still waiting on her membership card.

Avengers: Endgame lands in theaters on April 26.
