Why Prince Charles is the Best-Dressed Member of the Royal Family
Prince Charles has been in the spotlight from the moment he was born, and unlike his sons, Prince William and Prince Harry, the future King of England appears to adore in the attention. Though the Prince of Wales struggled to fit in with his family and define himself in the public eye in the past, now in his 70s, Prince Charles has seemingly hit his stride. These days, the prince enjoys spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and wife, Duchess Camilla Parker Bowles. He also loves nature, gardening and getting deeply involved in his philanthropy efforts.
However, there is one other hobby the prince loves to indulge in. While many of the royals go for more demure classic looks, Prince Charles likes to show his personality through his sense of style. Many would say that he’s the best-dressed member of the royal family,
One of the best-dressed men in the world
In the past, Prince Charles’ style wasn’t all that notable. However, recently he’s been stirring up quite the buzz in the fashion industry. In 2018, the prince rose from number 20 to number 6 on GQ’s best-dressed list. His signature style is a sharply tailored suit — British style, of course, coming from his favorites places Savile Row, Ede & Ravenscroft and Anderson & Shepp. These aren’t typical suits either. According to biographer Sally Bedell Smith’s book Prince Charles: The Passions and Paradoxes of an Improbable Life, “[He’s] always dressed in a double-breasted suit no pocket flaps, handkerchief billowing from the breast pocket, flower in the buttonhole and Turnbull & Asser shirts with French cuffs.”
Prince Charles is so particular about his custom-made suits that his tailors keep the scrap material to mend and patch things up when needed.
Back in 2013, when the prince was included on the list he said, “The recognition of GQ was encouraging to say the least. I took it very much as a vote for what can perhaps best be described as the classic and timeless look for British style.”
The prince might appear casual about being one of the most well-dressed men in the world, but apparently, he’s pretty obsessive about his wardrobe. According to author Tom Bower who wrote Rebel Prince: The Power, Passion and Defiance of Prince Charles, the prince is obsessed with his wardrobe, and he changes his clothes at least five times a day.
Shoelaces fit for a prince
It’s not simply his suits that Prince Charles is extremely meticulous about. Apparently, everything he has on has to be in order, including the shoelaces strung in his shoes. In Not in Front of the Corgis: Secrets of Life Behind the Royal Curtain, former royal servant Brian Hoey writes that the prince demands that his shoelaces get ironed whenever he takes off his shoes.
With this sort of attention to detail, we’re sure the prince is a bit miffed that he’s never won the top spot on GQ’s Best Dressed List. But, there’s always next year.
