Why Prince Charles May Connect More With Princess Charlotte Than Prince George
We all know and love Princess Diana, as she’s remembered as the people’s princess for a reason. Not only did she wish to connect with the public through her candid interviews, but it’s also clear she loved her family. While many royals weren’t too hands-on with their kids, Diana wanted the world to know she loved Prince Harry and Prince William more than anyone.
While we recall Harry and William’s tight relationship with their mother, their connection to their father is more complicated. And now that both sons are having children of their own, we’re all wondering what Prince Charles is like with his grandchildren, too. Here’s why we think Prince Charles may have a closer relationship with Princess Charlotte over Prince George (or Louis).
Prince Charles evidently loves being a grandfather
He may not be the most outspoken of the royals, but Prince Charles can’t contain the love he has for his grandkids. Recently, Hello! revealed Charles has shown off a photo of his grandchildren — Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis — that resides in his living room. And the royal also added that when he heard the news of Meghan Markle’s pregnancy, he toasted “several times” in celebration.
He’s also spoken candidly about life as a grandfather. While it’s well-documented that during his sons’ childhoods he wasn’t around nearly as much as Diana, he’s definitely taking an active interest in the littlest royals now. “It is very important to create a bond when they are very young,” he said. “It’s a different part of your life. The great thing is to encourage them. Show them things to take their interest. My grandmother did that, she was wonderful.”
Princess Diana said Prince Charles always wanted a daughter
As for which little royal Charles is most likely to have a connection with, we can’t help but think back to when Harry was first born. Good Housekeeping notes Princess Diana spoke to royal biographer Andrew Morton about her second pregnancy. She said as soon as Harry was born, their whole marriage “went down the drain,” even though six weeks prior, their relationship was the closest it’d ever been. And that was allegedly because Charles wanted a little girl — and Prince Harry wasn’t that.
Diana knew the baby’s sex before the birth, but he kept it from Charles, as she knew he wouldn’t be pleased. According to her, the first thing Charles said when Harry was born was, “Oh God, it’s a boy … and he’s even got red hair.”
We know that Charles and Harry have a close relationship now. But even so, we’re sure he was elated when little Princess Charlotte was born. She could be like the daughter he never had.
Prince Charles has already connected with George, however
While it’s likely Prince Charles will connect more with Charlotte as she gets a bit older, he’s already passing down many traditions to little George, who’s 5. He already restored Prince William’s old treehouse several years ago so George would have something fun and whimsical to play in. And Charles also purchased shepherd’s hut to add to his garden for the little royal to enjoy, too.
Not only that, but Harper’s Bazaar notes in a recent documentary titled Prince, Son and Heir: Charles at 70, Charles pointed at a group of trees in his Scottish arboretum and called it “George’s wood.” He then continued by saying he loved planting trees in his old age. “I hope it will be quite amusing for George, as they grow up, and he grows up,” he added. And we’re sure Charles will show Charlotte and Louis his green thumb, too, once they get just a bit older.
