Why Prince Charles Once Thought of Kate Middleton as ‘Tasteless’
“Tasteless” is one of the last words one might use to describe Kate Middleton, Duchess of Cambridge.
The way she’s carried herself since becoming an official member of the royal family when she married Prince William, Duke of Cambridge, in 2011 (learn why Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex, walked with a limp at his brother’s wedding) is by all accounts very tasteful (she’s mastered a great parenting tip too).
So, why did her father-in-law, Prince Charles once refer to her as “tasteless”? Find out ahead.
Why Prince Charles called Kate Middleton ‘tasteless’
According to Express, historian and royal biographer Sally Bedell Smith said following the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s first overseas tour of North America — they went to Canada (Ontario, Quebec, and Alberta) and Los Angeles, Calif. — the sheer number of photographs the couple appeared in bothered Prince Charles. He found many of their photo ops to be “tasteless.”
One particular photo op that bothered Prince Charles came when the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge were in Calgary during their 12-day tour. Queen Elizabeth II has bothered her son on occasion as well. Reportedly, one habit she has related to her dogs once bothered Prince Charles so much, he asked his mother to stop.
Prince William and Middleton wore cowboy hats and jeans to the Calgary Stampede where they officially marked the beginning of the stampede.
To us, they looked the part surrounded by others donning similar outfits (see below). Had they attended the royal engagement in more formal clothes they would’ve looked seriously out of place and unprepared.
In fact, one of the snapshots of the couple from what Prince Charles deemed “tasteless” photo ops made it into our list of the cutest pictures of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.
We thought the photos from the stampede were more fun than anything because it’s the norm to see them dressed up.
Another one of the photo ops that bothered Prince Charles came at the beginning of the tour. When Prince William and Middleton touched down in Calgary, they disembarked on a particularly windy day.
The newly minted Duchess of Cambridge walked alongside her husband and adjusted her hair and dress in the windy conditions but at one point when she greeted those waiting for them, photographs were taken of her dress being blown up by a gust of wind, exposing most of her legs.
Queen Elizabeth II notably has weights put in the hems of her skirts and dresses to prevent any wardrobe malfunctions.
Meghan Markle had a similar wardrobe malfunction
Like her sister-in-law, Meghan Markle, Duchess of Sussex, experienced a similar wardrobe malfunction. It just so happened it also occurred during her first royal tour after she and Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex, were married.
During a walkabout on Oct. 31, 2018, in Rotorua, New Zealand, Markle wore what appeared to be a see through pleated skirt. But as the Daily Mail reported, it may have been an optical illusion.
Markle and Middleton have both become pros at navigating royal tours and engagements. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex will embark on their first royal tour with their son, Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor, later this month when they will travel to one of Prince Harry’s favorite places in the world, Africa.
As for the Cambridges, they’ve been busy with Prince George returning to school and Princess Charlotte starting her first year (her classmates already have a cute nickname for the young royal).
