Why Prince Charles Was Disappointed As Soon As Prince Harry Was Born

The public loved Princess Diana when she married Prince Charles — but it’s no secret that their relationship was rocky at best. Now, all eyes have been on their sons, Prince Harry and Prince William. While William has his beautiful family with Kate Middleton, Harry is starting a family of his own with wife Meghan Markle. And certain reports say Charles still doesn’t have the best relationship with his sons, even with all the years that have passed.

From the very beginning of Prince Harry’s life, his father was already cracking jokes about the youngster. And one such instance really didn’t go over well with Diana. Here’s what happened.

Prince Charles reportedly wanted a little girl instead of another boy

We can’t imagine a royal family without William or Harry, but reports have stated before that Prince Charles may have been disappointed by Harry’s birth because he wasn’t a little girl. And this disappointment may have led to the collapse of Princess Diana and Prince Charles’ marriage.

In Diana: Her True Story — In Her Own Words, the royal spoke freely of her messy relationship with Charles, Good Housekeeping notes. She recalled, “Charles and I were very, very close to each other the six weeks before Harry was born, the closest we’ve ever, ever been and ever will be. Then, suddenly, as Harry was born, it just went bang, our marriage. The whole thing went down the drain.”  The publication also notes that Diana knew the sex of her second baby but kept it hidden from Charles, as she knew that he’d be upset by the news that they were having another little boy.

When Harry was finally born, Diana noted that Charles commented, “Oh God, it’s a boy,” much to her dismay. This certainly added to the tension in their relationship, too, though they divorced over a decade later. To make matters even worse, PopSugar notes at Harry’s christening Charles apparently said, “We were so disappointed — we thought it would be a girl,” to Diana’s mother.

He also cracked a joke about Harry’s hair color

As if the disappointment of Harry being a little boy wasn’t enough, Charles also made a joke regarding his newborn son’s hair color. PopSugar reports Charles said, “And he’s even got red hair,” which certainly offended Diana. Though the royal maintained that he was simply cracking a joke, Diana definitely wasn’t amused by his behavior.

It shouldn’t have been too surprising to Charles that his newborn son would have red hair, either. Her older sisters and younger brother also had this hair color. Other skeptics thought Harry wasn’t Charles’ baby, however. It’s known that Diana had an affair with horseback riding coach James Hewitt in the ’80s — but this was many years after Harry was born.

What is Prince Charles’ relationship like with his sons today?

He may have been resistant to fathering two sons back in the day, but how is Charles’ relationship with Harry and William now? While many reports claim he’s totally strained from his kids, Harper’s Bazaar reports the official residence of Charles and his wife, Camilla, said these reports are untrue. And Harry has even spoken highly of his father in recent times, further dispelling the rumors that they may not be on good terms.

At a garden party honoring Charles, Harry said, “His passion and dedication are remarkable and seeing so many of you here today, I cannot fail but to be in awe of the drive he has had for so many years, to contribute to the enrichment of society both in this country and around the world.” He also mentioned how Charles’ “enthusiasm and energy” have inspired him and William to get more involved with issues in the world that matter to them. Charles may never have the perfect relationship with his sons, but if anything, it certainly seems like it’s improved over the years.
