Why Prince Harry and Meghan Markle Want to Move Out of London and Into the Country
For a little over a year now, we’ve consumed any and all news regarding Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. When she was moving to London, how their wedding plans were coming along, how she was assimilating to being part of the royal family … you get the idea. Now, there are reports the Duke and Duchess of Sussex are packing their bags and leaving London for the countryside.
Here’s a look at why they’re leaving Kensington Palace, and why we kind of saw this move coming.
Where are they moving?
The Cut tells us the duke and duchess are moving to Frogmore Cottage, roughly 25 miles outside of the city. The large private home — which is much swankier than the name “cottage” lets on — is located on a 35-acre plot within the Windsor Castle Home Park estate. This is also the location where the couple took their engagement photos, and there were reports months ago that Harry threw a wedding after-party there. Royal correspondent Emily Andrews of The Sun reported via Twitter the estate is currently being refurbished and that the duke and duchess are expected to move there sometime next year.
Why they’re moving in the first place
This probably comes as no surprise to anyone: Harry and Meghan are leaving Kensington Palace because they want more privacy.
“Harry feels very imprisoned at Kensington Palace,” royal biographer Ingrid Seward tells PEOPLE.
The duo has dealt with an abundance of media attention since before they got engaged, and the constant spotlight only got brighter after their wedding back in May 2018. It doesn’t help matters that Meghan’s estranged family members have used her celebrity status to try snagging the limelight for themselves and have, no doubt, been a major headache.
Why this move isn’t a big surprise
Meghan and Harry are expecting their first child, so it’s understandable why they would want to spend some quality family time away from the city. You may also recall that Prince William and Kate Middleton left London to live at Anmer Hall in Norfolk when Prince George and Princess Charlotte were very young so they could have more privacy.
Harry and Meghan’s move also coordinates with Harry and William splitting some of their business dealings. While some thought this may be due to a quarrel between the princes, it’s more likely just a result of Harry starting his own family. It’s also more of a reflection of their different roles in the monarchy, with William being next in line to inherit the throne after their father, Prince Charles.
