Why Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s New House Is Their ‘Forever Home’
Prince Harry and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex have been on the move ever since they announced that they were stepping down from their duties as working royals. First, they moved to Canada, then LA, and now they have finally purchased a home in Montecito, California and it looks like they are staying put for a while.
Meghan and Harry leave their U.K. home
When Harry and Meghan decided to step down from their positions as working royals, that meant that they would have to make money on their own. They also claimed to want to repay the queen for some upgrades on their UK home.
“The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have shared their wish to repay Sovereign Grant expenditure for the refurbishment of Frogmore Cottage, which will remain their UK family home,” Buckingham Palace’s statement announcing the Sussexes’ decision read.
A lot of repairs had to be done on Frogmore Cottage before the Sussexes moved in.
“The heating systems were outdated and inefficient and were not to the environmental standards that we would expect today,” a source told People.
“The electrical system also needed to be substantially replaced and rewired, even extending to the establishment of a separate upgraded electrical substation, which was in addition to the main works on the property. And new gas and water mains had to be introduced to the property, replacing the five separate links that were there for the property before and were in a bad state of repair.”
The Sussexes paid for all the fixtures, fittings, and furnishings in the home.
“If a member of the royal family says, ‘We want a better kitchen than you’re prepared to provide with public money,’ then that would fall to them privately and they would have to meet the cost,” the source continued. “If they want that higher specification, they have to pay the extra.”
Meghan and Harry’s new home
Meghan and Harry are now calling a nine-bedroom, 19 bathroom house in Montecito home. The house is 18,671 square feet and cost the pair $14.6 million, which was almost $2 million less than it was listed for.
Along with the bedrooms, the home has a library, game room, wine cellar, theater, gym, spa, and wet and dry saunas. Of course, it also has a pool, tennis court, and a children’s cottage.
Harry and Meghan are reportedly really happy to have a home of their own.
“One of the most difficult things for Harry and Meghan was moving to the U.S. and not actually having a home of their own,” Omid Scobie, co-author of Finding Freedom: Harry and Meghan and the Making of a Modern Royal Family, told Entertainment Tonight.”It’s been interesting to see this line drawn between Harry and Meghan’s decision to move to California to some sort of connection to Hollywood. Of course, they’re now living in Santa Barbara, a hundred miles away from Los Angeles.”
People have speculated that the royal family had to help fund this new purchase, but several reports have suggested otherwise.
“Both of them are extremely liquid when it comes to their assets,” Scobie said. “Harry brings a lot to the table himself and Meghan lives off residuals from Suits and the many appearances that she’s done in other projects too.”
Why this is Meghan and Harry’s forever home
The Sussexes have been doing a lot of moving lately, but now they are staying put.
“Like many couples, they have a mortgage,” Scobie said. “It is a peaceful home. It’s a forever home and somewhere where they’ll lay their roots. It has space for Archie, a playground. Really, it’s gonna be a special part of their life.”
And the home is in the perfect, secluded location.
“I think moving slightly out of the city and somewhere where other celebrities are able to enjoy privacy, such as Oprah or Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis, they’re really able to now create a safe place to raise Archie, away from prying eyes,” Scobie said.
