Why Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s Podcast May Be Their Biggest Break From Royal Tradition Yet

Prince Harry and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex have made it clear that they are doing things their own way. The pair stepped away from their roles as working royals earlier this year and have not looked back since. Recently, the two announced that they were starting a podcast, which for the royal family is pretty unheard of.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s departure from royal life

In January, Meghan and Harry announced that they wanted to go on a different path and step away from royal life.

“After many months of reflection and internal discussions, we have chosen to make a transition this year in starting to carve out a progressive new role within this institution,” they announced on the Sussex Royal Instagram page. “We intend to step back as ‘senior’ members of the royal family and work to become financially independent while continuing to fully support Her Majesty the queen. It is with your encouragement, particularly over the last few years, that we feel prepared to make this adjustment.”

Many people doubted the Sussexes and wondered how they were going to support themselves without the backing of the royal family. But the Sussexes have since put the naysayers to shame.

On top of their appearances and Meghan’s Disney voiceover, Prince Harry and Meghan recently landed a multi-million dollar deal with Netflix to produce a number of films and shows.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s new podcast

Earlier this week, the Sussexes announced their new podcast deal between Spotify and their production company Archewell Audio. The two released a somewhat flirty introduction snippet where Meghan proclaimed that Harry “has a podcast voice.”

The Sussexes will host and produce podcasts “all with the goal to build community through shared experience, narratives and values,” their press release stated.

“What we love about podcasting is that it reminds all of us to take a moment and to really listen, to connect to one another without distraction,” Meghan and Harry said in a statement to People. “With the challenges of 2020, there has never been a more important time to do so, because when we hear each other, and hear each other’s stories, we are reminded of how interconnected we all are.”

What will the podcast be about?

Meghan and and Harry plan to feature guests on the podcast, however they have not released the list.

“We’re talking to some amazing people,” Meghan said in the clip. “They’re going to share their memories that really shape this past year, which has been, as we know, a difficult one for everyone.”

“So many people have been through so much pain this year, experiencing loss, a huge amount of uncertainty — but it feels worth acknowledging that 2020 has connected us in ways we have never imagined through endless acts of compassion and kindness,” Harry added.

How is this a break from the royal way?

The royal family typically communicates with the public through their Buckingham Palace press team. While members of the royal family have given interviews and done podcasts in the past, they don’t have their own. There has always been an air of inaccesibility when it comes to the royals and Harry and Meghan are breaking that down with every new venture that they take on.
