Why Prince Harry Held Baby Sussex in the First Official Photos
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle introduced the world to their baby boy this morning and there was something noticeably different about the way they posed for cameras: Prince Harry held their newborn son. This is a departure from the way things are typically done, as Prince William and Kate Middleton introduced their babies with mom holding the newborn.
The couple opted for a different photo location
Of course, fans of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex were well aware that they would not be posing for photos on the steps of the hospital hours after Markle gave birth. The location for their photo shoot was St. George’s Chapel in Windsor Castle, two days after the birth.
The new parents were absolutely beaming with joy, seen on video approaching the cameras, Prince Harry holding their child, dressed in a suit and tie, and Markle walking alongside him, wearing a Givenchy belted white dress.
The differences didn’t end with the new dad holding the baby either, as the couple had a small intimate conversation and photoshoot with limited media, versus the mob of photographers and fans that greeted Prince William and Middleton on the steps of the Lindo Wing following each of their children’s births.
The new parents chatted for a moment
Prince Harry and Markle gave a brief interview and some initial reactions about being first-time parents, with Markle noting: “It’s magic, it’s pretty amazing,” adding, “I have the two best guys in the world so I’m really happy. He has the sweetest temperament, he’s really calm. It’s just been a dream. It’s been a special couple of days.”
Prince Harry noted: “We’re just so thrilled to have our own little bundle of joy,” and talked a bit about who the baby looks most like. He explained: “Everyone says that babies change so much over two weeks. We are basically monitoring how the changing process happens over this next month. But his looks are changing every single day, so who knows.”
Examining the new parents’ body language
It was sweet to see Prince Harry holding the baby and body language expert Judi James shared with FEMAIL what their small gestures mean, noting that “Harry took his duties seriously and the softening of his facial features as he looked at his new baby formed a very besotted looking ‘look of love.’”
According to James, the way the Markle touched the baby’s head “suggested some slight anxiety but overall it was her taking the protective leadership role.” Markle was seen patting Prince Harry’s back, with James sharing: “She even rewarded Harry with a loving pat and back rub as they walked away from the cameras.’
Interestingly, James added that the couple connected with each other during the brief appearance, as she shared: “Prince Harry and Meghan still used some intense eye contact with one another. They’re keeping their own loving communications alive while they cooed over the baby.”
Why Prince Harry held the baby
Before Baby Sussex’s arrival, James previously the Sunday Express the reason why she believed Prince Harry would hold the baby for the first photos, noting: “Royal wives have often appeared after a birth holding the baby while the husband beams rather sheepishly and awkwardly beside them.”
She continued: “But for Harry I suspect the term ‘hands on’ might be just that, so we could see Harry holding the baby a lot while Meghan fondly embraces them both.”
