Why Princess Diana Really Believed ‘People’s Agendas Changed Overnight’ When She Separated From Prince Charles
The marriage between the Prince and Princess of Wales wasn’t a happy one. Eventually, they both realized things weren’t going to work between them and they separated. When that happened, Princess Diana believed things changed rather swiftly for her. People didn’t know how to handle her and the new relationship she now seemed to have with the Royal Family.
Princess Diana and Prince Charles separate
Princess Diana tried to be happy and content in her husband, but the expectations for a fairy tale marriage quickly burned away. Diana was drowning in a world of formality and publicity. She learned quickly what being the Princess of Wales really meant. She was lonely and her husband was not by her side the way he should have been.
The unhappiness came from a variety of places including Charles’ affair with Camilla Parker Bowles and Diana’s tendency towards self-harm. Not to mention they didn’t really know each other. They were married and produced heirs, but that didn’t mean they were in love and happy. The world was rooting for them, but things started to fall through the cracks almost immediately. The separation that had long been building was finally announced by the British Prime Minister John Major in December 1992.
Princess Diana opened up about her broken marriage
Diana took part in an infamous conversation with Martin Bashir in the BBC’s Panorama Interview in 1995. She was extremely candid during the interview and revealed new details about what life was really like for her in the Royal Family. Diana and Charles were no longer together and by 1993 people were changing their attitudes towards the Princess of Wales.
“People’s agendas changed overnight,” Princess Diana said. “I was now separated wife of the Prince of Wales, I was a problem, I was a liability (seen as), and how are we going to deal with her? This hasn’t happened before.”
Diana was seen as a ‘problem’
When Bashir questioned Diana about who asked these types of questions, she said, “People around me, people in this environment, and …”
“The royal household?” Bashir inquired. “People in my environment, yes, yes,” Diana finished. She went on to explain that they saw her as a problem and it was expressed in a variety of ways. “By visits abroad being blocked, by things that had come naturally my way being stopped, letters going, that got lost, and various things,” Diana revealed. “Everything changed after we separated, and life became very difficult then for me.”
Princess Diana and Prince Charles divorce
The inevitable divorce followed and Princess Diana gained her freedom from the Royal Family. Although she never really wanted a divorce, proceedings were eventually concluded in August 1996 and Diana was free. The end to the marriage must have shocked people when they first realized what was happening. The Prince and Princess of Wales were no longer together. It was a truly sad day for the monarchy and the world.
Princess Diana would die in a tragic car accident the following year after her divorce. Her loss shocked the entire country and the world.
