Why Serena Williams Had a Difficult Time Planning Make Meghan Markle’s Baby Shower
Tennis champion Serena Williams co-hosted the New York City baby shower held in February 2019 for her friend Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex, who is expected to give birth any day now to Baby Sussex.
Markle made a surprise trip across the pond for a weekend, where she caught up with friends and visited restaurants. The trip culminated in a baby shower at The Mark Hotel, which Williams hosted along with Markle’s friend, Jessica Mulroney.
Even now, months later, details still emerge about the shower. Keep reading to learn why Williams had a difficult time planning her friend’s baby shower and see the custom shower gift guests received.
Williams on shower: It ‘takes a lot of effort’
While being interviewed by Business of Fashion for a cover story, Williams gave some insight about planning a baby shower fit for a duchess. The interview took place just days after Markle’s baby shower.
“Planning something like that takes a lot of effort,” she said. “I’m a perfectionist, so I’m like, ‘Let’s make it perfect,’” Williams added. “It’s been a lot the last few days.
From the details we have about the shower, the event was perfect, just as Williams intended.
Guests received custom sweaters
Each guest at the baby shower received custom-made sweaters by Lingua Franca, as a shower gift. The navy blue sweaters with orange embroidery spelled out “baby, baby, baby” and possibly hinted that Markle is having a boy.
The company shared a snap of the sweater on their Instagram with the caption, “Any guesses whose baby shower we sent dozens of these to?
A spokesperson for Franca and her company confirmed to People that the sweaters were made for Markle. “We hope she received them, and we hope she loved them.”
Guests arranged flowers
One of the activities at the baby shower included arranging flowers.
Gayle King, who attended Markle’s shower, shared a small detail about the party on CBS This Morning. But she didn’t share too because Markle’s “a very private person.”
“I think she should decide what she wants to say about this,” King added.
King then shared a small piece of information about their flower arranging activity. “I hope she won’t mind me sharing this because I’ve never seen anything like this at a baby shower,” King said. “They had flower arranging. They brought in somebody to explain how to arrange flowers. We all each made an individual vase.”
Guests arranged vases of flowers which were then donated to Repeat Roses, who would disperse the arrangements among hospitals and other care facilities.
Cookies from the shower
Makeup artist, Daniel Martin, who is responsible for Markle’s wedding day makeup look, also attended her baby shower in New York City. He took to Instagram to share a sweet snap of the cookies that were served at the shower.
They appear to be sugar cookies with intricate piping detail. In the Feb. 20, 2019 post, Martin captioned the image of the cookies with the caption, “Such an incredible day celebrating #babylove 🎉🧸🎈”
