Why ‘Sharp Objects’ Star Patricia Clarkson Is Glad the 2019 Emmys Won’t Have A Host
There’s no host for the 71st Annual Primetime Emmy Awards, airing on Sunday, Sept. 22, 2019. And acclaimed actress Patricia Clarkson, a nominee this year, is happy about that. Here’s what she had to say.
Here’s how you know Patricia Clarkson
Clarkson got her start in Hollywood in the ’80s and ’90s. However, it wasn’t until the early ’00s that she became a fixture in film and TV. You may remember her from her roles in films such as Far from Heaven and All the Real Girls.
Clarkson was nominated for an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress in 2003 for Pieces of April. She went onto appear in dramas like Lars and the Real Girl and Shutter Island, and comedies like Easy A and Friends With Benefits. Clarkson is also known for TV roles in series such as House of Cards and Six Feet Under.
‘Sharp Objects’ is nominated at the 2019 Emmy Awards
Recently, Clarkson made her mark on TV once more in the HBO miniseries Sharp Objects. She starred as Adora Crellin, a wealthy housewife living in Wind Gap, Missouri who becomes a suspect in the disappearance of local teenage girls, while being investigated by her own daughter (played by Amy Adams).
Both Adams and Clarkson are nominated for their roles in Sharp Objects. The miniseries was also up for five Creative Arts Emmys, though didn’t take any home. It still stands a shot at the biggest prize in its category: Outstanding Limited Series.
What Clarkson said about the lack of Emmys host
Leading up to the Emmys, there are lots of parties to attend. On Saturday, Sept. 21, 2019, the day before the Primetime Emmys, Clarkson was in attendance at the BAFTA Los Angeles + BBC America TV Tea Party in Beverly Hills.
There, she was asked by Variety what she thinks about the lack of host at this year’s award ceremony. “It kind of works. Sometimes, we just don’t need the whole she-bang. Let’s just give out the awards and go drink,” she laughed.
Why isn’t there a host this year?
There have been plenty of hosts at the Primetime Emmy Awards, typically corresponding with the network airing it that year. In 2018, the awards were broadcast by NBC, so Saturday Night Live performers Michael Che and Colin Jost. The last time Fox hosted, in 2015, Andy Samberg of Brooklyn Nine-Nine was at the helm.
Now, for only the fourth time in the history of the awards ceremony, there will be no host (this previously happened in 1975, 1998, and 2003). This is likely due to last year’s poor viewership numbers (it was the least-watched Emmys ever) and the increase in viewers for the hostless Oscars this year.
Has Clarkson ever won an Emmy?
This is definitely not Clarkson’s first time at the Emmys. In fact, it’s her third nomination ever — and she’s got a very good batting average. Clarkson won both previous times she was nominated, in 2002 and then again in 2006, for Outstanding Guest Actress In A Drama Series for Six Feet Under.
However, that award is given out at the Creative Arts Emmys, so this is Clarkson’s first time being presented to on live TV. Will she take home the award? Returning for another HBO title definitely puts Clarkson in a good place, and we think she could keep up her winning streak this year.
