Why ‘Stranger Things’ Fans Are Loving David Harbour In the New ‘Black Widow’ Trailer
Actor David Harbour is well-known for his starring role in the hit sci-fi fantasy series Stranger Things. He’s also about to make his debut as a prominent character in the MCU. Here’s why fans are loving his role in the Black Widow teaser trailer.
David Harbour stars in ‘Stranger Things’
You most likely know Harbour from his role in the Netflix series Stranger Things. There, he portrays Jim Hopper, the local sheriff who gets very involved when weird things start happening in the town of Hawkins, Indiana. Harbour quickly gained notoriety for playing the gruff yet attentive cop.
Harbour’s role has only grown over time. He takes in Eleven (“El”) as his daughter and struggles with being a single parent in Seasons 2 and 3. There’s also the matter of his sexual tension with Joyce (Winona Ryder), though the two are more often at each other’s throats in frustration in Season 3.
He’ll appear in ‘Black Widow’ as Red Guardian
Throughout all of this, Harbour’s movie career has also been doing very well. After starring as the eponymous character in the Hellboy remake, he was cast in another superhero film: the upcoming Marvel Phase 4 opener, Black Widow.
First announced at San Diego Comic-Con 2019, Harbour will portray Alexei Shostakov, also known as Red Guardian. He is thought to be the Russian equivalent to Captain America, having also been injected with a serum. The film is due out on May 1, 2020.
The first ‘Black Widow’ teaser trailer is here
We finally have a first look at Black Widow. On Dec. 3, 2019, Marvel Studios released the teaser trailer for the upcoming flick, and it looks pretty incredible. Here’s what we’ve learned from it:
Natasha has had to make a quick escape after letting Steve Rogers and Bucky Barnes escape during the battle in Captain America: Civil War. She goes back to her native Russia, where she encounters her fellow agents. But can you really ever come home again?
Why ‘Stranger Things’ fans are relating the two
While Stranger Things and Black Widow don’t appear to have much in common on the surface (aside from Harbour himself), there’s more than you might expect. For one, both deal with superpowered humans who have to fight against alien forces and, occasionally, the government.
That’s where the internet’s hilarious reaction to the trailer comes in. At the end of Stranger Things Season 3, Hopper is seemingly killed. However, the post-credit sequence sees an official in Russia talking about “the American,” who is presumed to be Hopper. Notably, Black Widow features Hopper as a Russian superhero. Need we say more?
Harbour on ‘Stranger Things 4’
Sure, fans are excited to see Harbour in Black Widow next year. But many are more concerned about whether or not Hopper will really return. And Harbour is right there with you.
The actor appeared on Late Night With Seth Meyers and spoke about this, saying that he called up the Duffer Brothers (the creators of Stranger Things) and asked,k “Am I dead? Is Hopper dead?” Sadly, he didn’t get a straight answer, and so neither did we.
