Why the Media’s Attacks on Meghan Markle Are Beyond Hypocritical

It’s no secret that ever since Meghan Markle joined the royal family in 2018, her life has been extremely difficult. Despite being a Hollywood actress years before, Markle seems to have a very hard time dealing with the British tabloid who scrutinize her every move.

And it isn’t entirely Markle’s fault either. While the press has a history of being cruel to almost every celebrity, Markle has been targeted more so than most other members of the royal family.

In fact, it has gotten to the point where these media attacks on Markle are quite hypocritical. Especially when compared to how the media treats her sister-in-law: Kate Middleton.

Markle has not been given a break at all. Even before her wedding to Prince Harry, she was already dealing with a ton of bad press from family members who wanted to tear her down. Most notably, her half-sister Samantha was telling stories about Markle being an opportunist who ditched her family for fame.

As a royal, Markle started being criticized for breaking royal rules, having baby showers, and supposedly not getting along with other royal family members. There were also reports about her being “difficult” to work with.

Some people thought that perhaps the press would be kinder to her when she became a mother. However, that did not turn out to be true at all. After she gave birth to her son Archie, the media found new things to criticize her about, such as the way she was holding her baby.

Meghan Markle has spoken out about all the negative press

Although Markle usually tries to put on a happy face whenever she is out in public, it is clear that all the negative press has taken a toll on her. In the recent documentary, Harry and Meghan: An African Journey, Markle revealed that it has not been easy dealing with all the incessant criticism.

“Any woman, especially when they’re pregnant, you’re really vulnerable, and so that was made really challenging,” she shared. “Not many people have asked if I’m okay, but it’s a very real thing to be going through behind the scenes.”

Back in October, Markle and Prince Harry also announced that they would be taking legal actions against a few tabloid papers for constantly trying to defame and misrepresent Markle’s character.

Why these media attacks against Meghan Markle are hypocritical

The way that the media portrays Markle has been full of double standards. This is obvious when we look at how the media talks about the Duchess of Sussex and how it talks about the Duchess of Cambridge.

Insider recently pointed out the many ways in which news articles often attack Markle for doing the same thing that Middleton does. For example, when both women wore wedges to different events, Markle was called out for breaking royal protocol. Meanwhile, Middleton’s choice of footwear was admired and there was no mention of any breached protocol in articles about her. This pattern plays out again and again in other things that Markle and Middleton do — from crossing their legs to showing off their baby bumps.

Additionally, before Duchess Kate joined the royal family, she was criticized by some people for not having a career and just looking like she was waiting around to marry Prince William. Yet, Markle — a woman who came from a middle-class family and built a successful career for herself — did not get a warm embrace. Instead, some critics claim that she does not understand royal life and “hustles” too much.

Royal commentator Kristen Meinzer told Insider: “The press loves attacking Meghan because she is not like the rest of the aristocracy. Unlike them, she’s an American, a self-made woman, and black. In short, I don’t think Meghan would be facing any of these double standards if she were white.”
