Why the Royal Family Will Probably Never Really Like Camilla Parker Bowles

In 2005, the Prince of Wales married his second wife, Camilla Parker Bowles, and she became the Duchess of Cornwall. Charles and his bride tried hard to win over the hearts of many in the United Kingdom, who were not very accepting of Parker Bowles and refused to view her as anything but the woman who broke up Princess Diana’s marriage.

Time has seemed to heal a lot of wounds though, and more than two decades after Diana’s death, people have finally started to give Camilla a chance. However, even if the British public does forgive her, will the members of the royal family ever really be able to let go of the tension and ill feelings they still have towards her?

Even though they’re all smiles when photographed during appearances, Parker Bowles has feuded with or ticked off just about every member of Charles’ family. Here’s a look at her complicated relationship and feuds with the other royals and what started it all.

Diana knew that Prince Charles and Parker Bowles carried on an affair behind her back. In fact, the princess decided to confront her husband’s mistress about it.

In the biography Diana: Her True Story, Andrew Morton wrote about Diana’s account of what she said happened when she came face to face with Parker Bowles. She reportedly stated, “I said, ‘I know what’s going on between you and Charles and I just want you to know that.'”

According to Morton, Diana then said that Parker Bowles did not deny anything and replied, “‘You’ve got everything you ever wanted. You’ve got all the men in the world to fall in love with you and you’ve got two beautiful children, what more do you want?'”

Queen Elizabeth II knew Parker Bowles for many years as Camilla’s first husband, Andrew Bowles, was the Queen Mother’s godson. Therefore, she became very upset when she learned about the affair between her and Charles. She even banned Parker Bowles from the palace for a while.

Finally, in 2005, following years of Prince Charles trying desperately to get his mother to warm up to his love, the queen granted him permission to marry Parker Bowles. This was done only after Charles agreed that when he becomes king his bride would only take the title of Princess Corset, not Queen of England.

Philip was also very critical of his son’s extramarital affair with Parker Bowles. The Duke of Edinburgh reportedly wrote letters to Diana and tried to be a mediator when the couple’s marriage was crumbling.

According to former royal butler Paul Burrell, some of Philip’s notes were sympathetic towards the princess, but others questioned if she was to blame for Charles’ transgressions. One letter said, “We never dreamed he might feel like leaving you for her. I cannot imagine anyone in their right mind leaving you for Camilla. Such a prospect never even entered our heads.”

Another read: “Can you honestly look into your heart and say that Charles’ relationship with Camilla had nothing to do with your behavior towards him in your marriage?”

Back when Prince William and Kate Middleton were still dating, Parker Bowles reportedly didn’t approve of her stepson’s relationship with his future wife.

According to Christopher Andersen’s book, Game of Crowns, the Duchess of Cornwall was so against William and Middleton being together that in 2007, she asked Charles to talk his son into breaking up with her. William did, but they got back together a few weeks later.

Parker Bowles was said to be furious, partly because she thought the future duchess was “too common” to be with a prince.  She was also angry that while she tried so hard to get people in Britain to like her, everyone seemed to love Middleton right away.

Another thing that allegedly rubs Parker Bowles the wrong way is how popular William and Middleton have become not just in the U.K., but around the world. She and Prince Charles are reportedly upset that the Duke and Duchess have outshined them on many occasions.

Charles and Parker Bowles have been particularly bothered by the fact that when they travel abroad, they are greeted by much smaller crowds than the number of people who show up to welcome William and his wife.

While it’s been reported that William was especially resistant to meet Parker Bowles when his father first told the princes about her, Harry was also angry. He reportedly did not want anything to do with the woman their mother called “Charles’ lady.”

Over the years, however, both Harry and William recognized that Parker Bowles made their father happy and formed a relationship with her. Harry even said in the past that he and his brother “loved her to bits.”

At some point though, many noticed that their relationship with her seemed to change. In July 2017, they were expected to say a few nice things about their stepmother at her 70th birthday party, but instead chose not to speak at all.

Whether or not tensions with Harry and Parker Bowles cooled over the years, they definitely began boiling again after Parker Bowles allegedly made it known that she was not a fan of his then-fiancee, Meghan Markle.

Rumors about the Duchess of Cornwall not approving of Markle because of the former actress’ non-royal background don’t seem too far-fetched — especially considering that it’s reportedly the same reason she didn’t like Middleton.

It’s been alleged that not only did Parker Bowles believe Markle wasn’t “worthy” of marrying a member of the royal family, but she also questioned a breakup the ex-Suits star had with Canadian chef, Cory Vitiello. Some reports claimed that Markle dumped her beau of two years for the prince, which is something the Duchess of Cornwall saw as a “social climb.”
