Why This Character Will Likely Be Missing From ‘Deadpool 3’

Deadpool 3 will mark the Merc With a Mouth’s first rodeo under the Disney umbrella. Maintaining an R-Rating, the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) film is set to highlight the character’s crude nature, dark and twisted sense of humor, fondness for violence, and self-hating tendencies … everything we love him for. He’s the prototypical antihero with a soft heart he cannot hide from, and Ryan Reynolds is perfectly suited to gear up once more.

While many presumed Marvel Studios would strip away the mature themes inherent to the character’s disposition, he will retain his adult-oriented personality (to the pleasure of us all). However, while Deadpool will presumably be similar in depiction, many of the other franchise’s facets will face alteration.

Recent news suggests that one character will no longer be in the sequel or, will at best, receive a small cameo. According to We Got This Covered (WGTC), Vanessa Geraldine Carlysle (portrayed by Morena Baccarin) may be amiss in the upcoming Merc installment.

The outlet reported that — relying on the same sources who knew Deadpool 3 was in active development months prior to the announcement — the beloved character might not return at all. However, if she does, her role will be drastically minimized. So, why no Vanessa (potentially)? Based on the fact that Deadpool is no longer under Fox, and that Marvel likely wants to take the character in a new direction, removing the love interest is a logical step.

Why Marvel Studios may remove Vanessa from Deadpool’s MCU life

As WGTC notes, Deadpool 3 is supposed to be a “fresh start” for the Merc — a life in the MCU will now begin, with the character’s fate destined to intertwine with various other X-Men and Avengers.

Vanessa represents a shackle to the character’s former Fox depiction and, if Marvel wants to take a deep dive into the character’s pansexuality, as Ryan Reynolds reportedly desires, a committed relationship may not make such an exploration easy. However, there’s one other potential plotline in the comics that Marvel Studios may be hoping to explore, given the fact that Black Widow is on the horizon.

Black Widow will introduce another character to don the mysterious title — Yelena Belova. Yelena Belova, many believe, will be the next Black Widow in the MCU, following Scarlett Johansson’s long run. So, why does this matter?

Inside Deadpool and Black Widow’s history

Deadpool and Yelena Belova possess a romantic history. Deadpool tried to win her over many a time to no avail; he found her fighting skills and good looks irresistible. They have an interesting dynamic (boasting tension you can cut with a knife). However, in the original story, who Deadpool thinks is Yelena winds up being Natasha, and things get a bit complicated, as DenOfGeek explains.

The MCU can always play with the comic book facts though, using the story’s foundation as a way to begin connecting Deadpool to the Marvel landscape at large.

The MCU remains fixated on vast interdependencies and multiple dynamic interrelationships; connecting Deadpool to Black Widow may just be the start of the Merc’s influence over the entire MCU.
