Why Was Queen Elizabeth II Shocked By Meghan Markle’s Wedding Dress?

Meghan Markle, Duchess of Sussex, sparkled on her wedding day. The former actress wed Prince Harry on May 19, 2018, in St George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle in a lavish ceremony attended by royals and Hollywood’s elite. Markle’s stunning day was watched by millions of people across the world with over 800 guests attending the couple big day. After the ceremony, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex had a whimsical 200-person reception which was held at Frogmore House and hosted by Prince Harry’s father, Prince Charles.

On her big day, Markle wore two dresses, her ceremony gown, and a white, Stella McCartney party dress. However, when Markle first stepped out to reveal her wedding dress, Prince Harry’s grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II was shocked.

A stark white gown

For her big day, the former Suits actress wore a gown designed by the British fashion designer Clare Waight Keller, artistic director of the fashion house Givenchy. Her veil was embroidered with flowers representing the countries of the Commonwealth as well as the California poppy– Markle’s home state. The dress was elegant, made of silk and had three-quarter-length sleeves, an open boat neckline, and a train with built-in triple silk organza underskirt. She also wore a 16-foot veil with Queen Mary’s diamond bandeau tiara placed on her head.

While most people praised Markle’s wedding attire, Queen Elizabeth was a bit taken aback.  According to Daily Mail, “The Queen is said to have expressed surprise that Meghan, a divorcee, wore quite such a white dress for her wedding.” We think that’s more than a bit old fashion, but the queen is super traditional. However, it was Markle’s wedding day, and we think she had the right to wear whatever she wished. While some people though the gown was a bit plain, Robin Givhan of The Washington Post said,  “It was not a Hollywood red-carpet statement…it was not a Disney-princess fantasy…the dress was a backdrop; it was in service to the woman.”

Wardrobe rules

While we think Markle is super sleek and fashion forward. The queen reportedly has issues with her granddaughter-in-law’s wardrobe. Sources told The Mail on Sunday, “Meghan is being told she needs to start dressing less like a Hollywood star and more like a Royal.” Apparently, the queen was a bit miffed when Markle and Prince Harry attended a showing of Hamiton, and the duchess rocked a tuxedo mini dress. Additionally, when Markle attended her first solo visit with the queen, aides lightly suggested that she wear a hat. Unfortunately, Markle didn’t get the hint, and she showed up hatless which annoyed the queen.

Markle is a vibrant young mother-to-be, so we think that she should be able to wear whatever she wants. After all, she’s already being forced to wear those dreadful pantyhose and hats that the queen requires all royal women to wear.

We’d assume that Markle’s wardrobe is going to get even more daring as her pregnancy continues, so we hope the queen is prepared for all of the fashion she’s about to see.
