After almost eight years of American Horror Story, it’s hard to imagine the FX anthology series without a glimpse of Sarah Paulson. The actress exceeded expectations in every role she fell into, from Cordelia Foxx in Coven to Lana Winters in Asylum. So of course, fans were blindsided when reports claimed Paulson would not return for 1984, the show’s ninth season. But you haven’t seen the last of Paulson just yet.
Paulson might come back for ‘American Horror Story: 1984’ — but no promises
In April, Paulsen admitted she didn’t know if she was returning for Season 9 while speaking with Syfy. “I think… all I can say is I know the least about this season upcoming that I’ve known about any season,” she said. “I don’t even know.” Later, Variety confirmed Paulson wouldn’t appear in a major role for 1984.
“You never know, I may pop up,” Paulson told Entertainment Tonight. “You never know. No promises though.”
The actress also opened up about her time away from the FX series this season. And as it turns out, she’s keeping tabs. “It’s a little bittersweet because I have a lot of friends who are still on the show. So I’m getting updates about how it’s all going and what they’re doing, and I’m like, ‘Wait, what? You worked until two? Oh, I remember working until two on that show,'” Paulson shared. “And then I’m also very glad that I can wake up at a decent hour because I’m not cross-eyed from having worked insane nights.”
But even if she may not be as involved with 1984, Paulson remains supportive of the series. “I’ll be watching and cheering everybody on,” she said. “I’m really excited for this season. I think it’s a really cool idea for the show this year.”
Why Paulson won’t be starring in ‘American Horror Story: 1984’
Although Paulson will be taking a backseat in 1984, the Emmy-winning actress has plenty of projects on her plate. She is currently involved in Mrs. America, alongside Kate Blanchett, as well as the new season of American Crime Story. She has also been cast in a leading role in Ratched, a Netflix series executive produced by American Horror Story co-creator Ryan Murphy.
Regardless, it seems Paulson has a tight schedule, and her absence from American Horror Story is understandable. During her Syfy interview, the actress shared she doesn’t even have the time to direct.
“I might like to do another American Horror Story. I definitely won’t be directing any time soon, though,” she revealed. “I was supposed to direct Episode 8, and then I got a call from Ryan saying, ‘I want you to do the ‘Return to Murder House’ episode.’ And it was starting in two weeks. So I had very, very little time to prepare. So, the next time I do it, I would like to have that prep time.”
It looks like the cast of the FX series will look a little different this year. Paulson isn’t the only notable name missing, as Evan Peters and Billy Eichner have both opted out of returning for American Horror Story: 1984. However, the show lives on. And hey, at least Paulson might be returning. So now all fans have to do it wait — no matter how long that may be.
