Why You’ll Never Hear Meghan Markle Say Something Nasty About Someone
President Trump’s official state visit this week may be a little awkward considering his recent comments about Meghan Markle. Especially with Prince Harry, who would want to defend his wife and has to spend time around Trump.
Tensions are probably running a bit high. What exactly did Trump say about Meghan to cause such a fuss, and is it true? Let’s go over everything we know.
What Donald Trump said about Meghan Markle
Before Meghan became part of the royal family, she was an actress with a large platform and big opinions. During the 2016 presidential election, she wasn’t shy about sharing her thoughts on Trump with her fellow Americans. She called him “misogynistic” and “divisive.”
Last week, ahead of his U.K. visit, Trump sat down for an interview with The Sun. He was asked his opinion on Meghan. Trump hadn’t heard Meghan’s comments on him before, so the interviewer took the opportunity to enlighten him. The interviewer then said: “She said she would move to Canada if you got elected. It turns out she moved to Britain.”
Trump responded by saying: “There are a lot of people moving here. So, what can I say? No, I didn’t know that she was nasty.”
His comments enraged U.K. citizens and Meghan’s fans. Trump later said his comments weren’t meant to be a reflection on Meghan’s character. He claims he only called her opinions “nasty,” not Meghan herself.
Why you’ll never hear Meghan or other royals sharing political opinions
Now that Meghan is a royal, you’ll no longer hear her political opinions. That’s because it’s against royal protocol for any member of the royal family to express a political opinion or to vote. In order to represent the entire British people, they are to remain neutral.
The official website of the monarchy states: “As Head of State, The Queen has to remain strictly neutral with respect to political matters, unable to vote or stand for election, however Her Majesty does have important ceremonial and formal roles in relation to the government of the U.K.”
Although these rules only officially apply to the queen, other members of the royal family are expected to follow them as well. As a matter of good policy, and to appeal to the widest possible group of citizens, the royal family stays out of politics by habit.
Meghan Markle’s conversation training
Anyone who joins the royal family is required to go through training on royal protocol, rules, and etiquette. Kate Middleton was taught in these matters when she married Prince William, and the same applies to Meghan. The queen’s private secretary reportedly taught the new duchess everything she needs to know, over a period of six months.
The training includes how to handle different kinds of conversations. This would consist of discussions with political figures, other royals, and all sorts of important people. It also includes training on how to speak with the media, and how to avoid commenting on anything political in nature. Now that Meghan is married into the royal family, it’s unlikely that you’ll ever hear another political thought from Meghan.
Is Meghan Markle a ‘nasty’ princess?
Although Meghan may have commented on Trump before she was a royal, her life was completely different at the time. It’s very normal for Hollywood figures to speak about their political opinions. Meghan had no idea she would join the royal family in the future, you can’t blame her for speaking like any other normal American.
Considering the strict rules that the royal family has to follow, it’s unlikely you will ever hear Meghan’s opinion on politics again. Not only that, but royals are known to be very polite. They would never insult another person, no matter how much they deserved it. Learning how to deal with those kinds of awkward situations, and get out without insulting anyone, is exactly the kind of thing royal training would cover.
So, is Meghan a “nasty” princess? Given how guarded and polite the royals are, we will most likely never hear an unkind word from Meghan in public again. Meghan makes being a royal look easy, with her natural charm, and warm characteristics. No one could ever say that Meghan was “nasty” and have there be any kind of truth to it.
