Will 98-Year-Old Prince Philip Attend Princess Beatrice’s Wedding After Almost Skipping Out on Princess Eugenie’s?
Prince Andrew and Sarah, Duchess of York’s oldest daughter, Princess Beatrice, is set to marry her fiancé, Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi, on May 29. The ceremony will take place at The Chapel Royal, St James’s Palace in London and will be followed by a reception thrown by Queen Elizabeth II at Buckingham Palace. But questions have come up about the queen’s husband, Prince Philip, who now lives more than 100 miles away from the city, and if will attend the affair at all.
Read on to find out whether or not Philip will make the event and the reason why he almost skipped on out on the wedding of Beatrice’s younger sister, Princess Eugenie, when she tied the knot in 2018.
Why Prince Philip almost didn’t attend Princess Eugenie’s nuptials
Prince Philip is 98 years old but his advanced age isn’t the only reason people have been questioning if he will attend his granddaughter’s upcoming nuptials.
Royal fans may recall that Philip was reportedly willing to skip Princess Eugenie’s nuptials in 2018 because of his disdain for her mother, Sarah Ferguson.
The Duke of Edinburgh and Fergie’s feud dates back to the ’90s when the duchess was still married to Andrew and photos of her sunbathing topless while getting her toes sucked by another man were splashed all over the news. The scandal was something that Philip, in particular, was livid about and he never forgave her for.
It’s been reported that Philip is also the reason Fergie was not invited to Prince William and Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge’s royal wedding. She was invited to Prince Harry and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex’s but only to the public ceremony, not the private reception afterward because Philip doesn’t like even being in the same building as her.
Will the duke be at Princess Beatrice’s wedding?
In the end, Eugenie’s grandfather did go to her wedding.
Just before the big day, a palace source revealed, “He absolutely adores Eugenie. He can’t stand up for very long, which makes church services hard work, and he can’t stand Fergie, but he wants to see Eugenie married and, if he is fit enough to be there, he will be there.”
Now, The Express has reported that if his health allows it Philip will travel from Norfolk to London and put his feelings for Fergie aside to see Beatrice get married as well.
“The Duke of Edinburgh, who will be 99 in June, will undoubtedly attend the wedding if his health permits as he did Eugenie’s, despite having retired,” royal commentator Richard Fitzwilliams told the publication.
Princess Beatrice and Mozzi’s special day will be much different than royal weddings we have seen in the past and part of that has to do with the ongoing scandal surrounding Prince Andrew. The affair won’t be televised and there will be no more than 150 guests in attendance.
