Will ABC’s ‘Scandal’ Get a Reboot?

Scandal was one of the most popular shows on ABC. It won many awards over the years and was lauded for being a breath of fresh air on television with its interesting characters, gripping plot, and representation for minority groups.

Sadly, Scandal ended in 2018 after seven seasons. However, reboots of popular shows are everywhere these days, so no doubt there are fans who would love to see Scandal get picked up again, even with a different storyline.

But is that possible? Will Scandal ever get a reboot in the future? Here’s what we know.

‘Scandal’ was on the air for 6 years

Scandal premiered in 2012 and introduced the world to PR guru Olivia Pope (Kerry Washington) as well as other people associated with her in Washington D.C. politics.

Over the years, fans watched as Olivia Pope ran her own crisis management firm, navigated her complicated relationship with President Grant, learned about her family’s past, and became Command of the black-ops B613, among many other things that happened on this riveting series.

Scandal also earned the distinction of being the first network drama in 40 years to have an African-American female lead – something that last happened in the 1970s.

Additionally, the show has been praised for having positive portrayals of female characters. It showed numerous women who defied society’s expectations and proudly fought for what they wanted in life. Scandal even had instances of two female presidents and one was elected by the people.

Furthermore, the main character, Olivia Pope, had an abortion, which spoke for how much the series supported causes that are important for women in America.

Kerry Washington once said in an email: “I think the success of the show speaks to how we have become more inclusive as a society because the fans of the show span all different races and ages and genders… It’s very exciting.”

In 2018, Scandal ended its seven-season run after six years on the air.

‘Scandal’ ended with a mysterious scene

Things turned out quite well for most of the characters on Scandal during the finale. B613 got taken down, Cyrus Beene resigned from the vice presidency, and Olivia Pope seemed to finally have a bright future ahead.

Although it’s not clear exactly where Olivia Pope ended up, there was a scene that many fans remember in the final episode. Two girls were seen looking up at a huge portrait of her at the National Gallery.

No explanation has been given about what this all means, though some fans believe that Olivia Pope either became the president or she was acknowledged by the country for her work in saving the government.

Either way, the show seemed to have implied that D.C.’s favorite crisis manager really went on to do big things in the future.

Will ‘Scandal’ get a reboot?

If Olivia Pope did went on to become president, there is definitely a lot of materials there for a reboot about her time in the Oval Office.

However, unfortunately for fans who would like to see all of that happen, creator Shonda Rhimes shared that when Scandal ended in 2018, it was for good.

Scandal is finished,” Rhimes announced last year. “I love everybody and would work with everybody again in a heartbeat, but Scandal is finished.”

Unlike Rhimes’ other popular series, Grey’s AnatomyScandal was reportedly never meant to go on for a long time.

In 2017, ABC’s entertainment president Channing Dungey confirmed that Shonda Rhimes was always clear about the show having a definite ending at season seven: “She said, ‘Look, I really feel like season seven is where I want to wrap up this story, because I always prefer to end a show where you’re feeling on top as opposed to letting things fizzle out.'”
