The new James Bond movie finally has a title. The 25th film about the suave super-spy will be called No Time to Die. The movie, which is directed by Cary Fukunaga, will be released on April 8, 2020, in North America.
No Time to Die is the fifth Bond movie for British actor Daniel Craig. He’s played the part since 2006’s Casino Royale, when he took over the iconic role from Pierce Brosnan. But Craig has decided to hand over the keys to the Aston Martin. The upcoming Bond film will be his last, the actor confirmed in 2017 after months of speculation. Naturally, there’s been plenty of chatter about who might step into the Bond role for a 26th film. So far, no announcement has been made, but there are plenty of contenders.
Could Aidan Turner be the next Bond?
Since Craig announced his Bond retirement, it seems that nearly every actor under the age of 50 has been mentioned as a possible replacement. That includes Aidan Turner, the 36-year-old Irish actor best known for playing Ross Poldark on the BBC/PBS series Poldark and the dwarf Kili in The Hobbit movies.
Turner’s odds of being the next Bond are currently 8/1, according to Marathon Bet, a tie with Benedict Cumberbatch. Turner is trailing several other prominent actors, but is still within the top 10. Games of Thrones veteran Richard Madden is the favorite, with 5/2 odds.
Tom Hiddleston, James Norton, Tom Hardy, Idris Elba, Cillian Murphy, and Damian Lewis are among the other leading contenders, according to bookmakers. Less likely candidates include Downton Abbey’s Dan Stevens, future Batman Robert Pattinson, and Gillian Anderson, the only woman to make Marathon Bet’s list.
What Turner has to say about playing Bond
The fifth season of Poldark (which is currently airing in the U.K.) features Turner’s character engaging in some stealthy work for the English government. That seems like it might have prepared him for a job as Bond, as the Irish Times noted in its review of the final season of Poldark.
Turner hasn’t said much about the possibility that he might be asked to be the next 007. The actor noted last year that the role was taken, but that he would be interested.
“There’s someone else playing the role at the moment but when it’s free I’ll have a look at it,” he told the Daily Mail.
He has one former Bond actor’s vote
At least one former Bond actor has said Turner is the right person for the part. Roger Moore, who played the spy in seven films between 1973 and 1985 and died in 2017, said he thought the actor could pull off playing 007.
“I do think Aidan Turner looks very good,” Moore told TalkRadio in 2016, as reported by the Huffington Post. Moore also thought Hiddleston, then coming off his role in the spy drama The Night Manager, might be a good fit.
