Will Ariel Winter and Other Actresses Ever Stop Getting Criticized for Their Looks?
Ariel Winter is a rising young actress known for her work on the ABC series Modern Family, which she has been a part of for nearly 10 years.
Aside from being a known face on TV every week, Ariel Winter also has a popular Instagram account with almost 4 million followers.
Getting attention from people can be great for one’s career in Hollywood, but it also means that nothing about your appearance will escape scrutiny, as Ariel Winter has experienced all too often.
Ariel Winter grew up in front of the camera on ‘Modern Family’
Ariel Winter has been on Modern Family since she was 11 years old. She plays Alex Dunphy, a nerdy overachiever with no fashion sense and is basically the total opposite of her popular older sister.
Today, Ariel Winter is 21 years old, which means that she spent a huge portion of her childhood being on TV, where viewers everywhere got to see her transform from a geeky little kid to a fully-grown, young adult.
Ariel Winter often gets mean comments about her body
Growing up in front of the whole world has not been an easy process as Ariel Winter often gets rude comments about how she looks.
Recently Winter posted a selfie and trolls descended on her with comments about how her face looked like she got bad plastic surgery.
“Might wanna give your surgeon a call. Doesn’t look like they did a great job,” one hater said.
Another person wrote: “Lip fillers, chin fillers, Botox, and chapped lips. You were so beautiful, you don’t need all that.”
However, Ariel Winter quickly clapped back to tell the trolls that their harsh words were simply uncalled for as she had never done anything to her face.
“Thank you all for the kind comments,” she said. “For everyone who is saying I ‘ruined my face’ and ‘look horrible now because of all the plastic surgery’… this is awkward because I didn’t get any, so…”
Ariel Winter has also lost a lot of weight in the past year, leading to more comments about her appearance from internet followers. When someone asked her “Why so thin?” on Instagram, she couldn’t help but give an explanation.
According to Ariel Winter, her weight change has been due to switching medications for her depression.
“For years I had been on
anti-depressantthat caused me to gain weight that I couldn’t lose no matter what I did. It was always frustrating for me because I wanted to be able to get fit and feel like the work I was doing was paying off, but it never felt that way.”
However, last year, she decided to find a new combination of medication that works and would not make her gain weight. When she succeeded, she was able to work out and the weight loss soon followed.
The story simply is a reminder to everyone to take a step back before judging someone without knowing their full story.
Why do people care so much about how female celebrities look?
In Hollywood, there are a lot of expectations placed on female celebrities to not only excel at their job but to look good all the time for public consumption. The pressure is constantly there and anyone who does not comply often gets shamed by trolls online.
Although there’s no doubt that male celebrities face criticisms for their appearances as well, women get several more expectations added on. They have to wear make-up everywhere while men don’t. They have to maintain their youthful look because actresses are deemed useless after a certain age in Hollywood.
Additionally, they have to look good while pregnant and make sure that their body is fit even after giving birth.
Will these criticisms ever stop for Ariel Winter and other actresses?
Unfortunately, it does not seem as if the judgments will stop anytime soon. In fact, the problem has actually gotten worse compared to a couple of decades ago.
With the ubiquity of social media, everyone now has a voice online and can directly tell celebrities how they feel, leading to a lot more negative comments going around.
Supermodel Tyra Banks has said that because of social media, models in her industry nowadays have more pressures placed on them than she did back in the
Dealing with these things is simply now a part of show business that Ariel Winter and other actresses will have to accept. But since Ariel Winter herself is a Gen-Z who grew up with the internet, no doubt she has learned how to navigate this complex system and make the most of it.
