Will Bryan Cranston Be in the ‘Breaking Bad’ Movie?
Fans have a hard time letting go of TV shows that they really love, and certain shows, in particular, seem to take hold of the viewer’s imagination and become the stuff of pop culture mythology. One such show is Breaking Bad, an AMC series that ran from 2008 to 2013, and is widely considered, by critics and audiences, to be one of the greatest TV shows ever produced.
In the years since the iconic finale episode aired, speculation has continued regarding a possible sequel series or even stand-alone movie. Recently, some news was unveiled that sent fans of Breaking Bad into a fever pitch of excitement.
What is ‘Breaking Bad’ about?
Breaking Bad debuted in January 2008 and focused on the character of Walter White, played by Bryan Cranston, a high school science teacher in Albuquerque, New Mexico. White is struggling with his day-to-day existence, working a second job in order to make ends meet for his family, which includes his pregnant wife Skyler and their son, Walter, Jr. who suffers from cerebral palsy.
In the very first episode of the show, White is diagnosed with lung cancer, a revelation that turns his life upside down. To avoid sending his family into crippling medical debt, White enlists the aid of a delinquent former student, Jesse Pinkman, and starts cooking high-grade meth. White and Pinkman market their product to some of the biggest gangsters in New Mexico, and get involved in incredibly dangerous situations, all while avoiding the law and keeping their secret safe from family and friends.
The show became one of the most-watched cable shows in history and earned multiple Emmy awards for the acting, writing, and production value of the show. By the time Walter White made his final appearance in September 2013, the show had become an integral part of the American cultural scene.
Will Cranston be in the spinoff movie with Aaron Paul?
In November 2018, Bryan Cranston appeared on the Dan Patrick Show and confirmed what fans had been hoping for – that there is indeed a full-length movie in the works that is set in the Breaking Bad universe. Cranston admitted that he wasn’t sure if he would appear in the movie, but that he definitely would if Vince Gilligan, the showrunner and creative force behind Breaking Bad, were to ask him.
He has been very open about his affection for the show and has said that it’s the highlight of his professional life. It’s likely that Cranston will appear in the movie in some small capacity, even if it’s a small cameo or flashback scene, worked into the present-day plot of the film.
It seems like the spinoff film will focus on the character of Jesse Pinkman, played by Aaron Paul. There is certainly room to flesh out Pinkman’s story – in the final episode of Breaking Bad, Pinkman’s fate was uncertain, as he literally drove off into the night. Paul has been working consistently since the series ended but is best known for his role as Jesse Pinkman, for which he earned three Best Supporting Actor Emmy awards during the run of the show.
Sources also report that the Breaking Bad movie will likely debut on Netflix, the hottest entertainment platform around. So far, no other details have been released about the film, and Vince Gilligan has yet to officially confirm that the project is a go. However, for fans, Bryan Cranston’s endorsement is all they need to know, and it’s certain that when the film does drop to Netflix, it will be one of the biggest releases of the year for the streaming platform.
