Will Chris Hemsworth Play Thor In Marvel’s Disney+ Series ‘What If …?’
Out of all the original Avengers still standing after Avengers: Endgame, Thor seems to have the most promising future. For one thing, he’s alive. For another thing, he has at least one more theatrical movie coming, and he’ll play at least one role in the upcoming slate of Marvel TV shows on Disney+.
Chris Hemsworth will be back not only in Thor: Love and Thunder, coming in 2021, but he’ll also reprise his role in What If…? Marvel Studios’ first animated series that imagines alternate realities for our heroes. And while it has not been confirmed, it only makes sense that he’ll pop up in the series devoted to Thor’s prankster brother Loki.
Where we left off with Thor
Thor arguably endured the most suffering out of any of the Avengers who weren’t named Iron Man and Black Widow in Avengers: Endgame. The beginning of that movie found him despondent and filled with self-loathing after he failed to kill Thanos.
And although he and his colleagues ultimately won in the end, Thor still seemed uncertain of himself, leaving the Earth Asgard colony in the very capable hands of Valkyrie and going off with his new friends the Guardians of the Galaxy.
While that left Thor the character in somewhat uncertain shape, it left the Thor franchise in very good shape. There are multiple directions in which Thor could go.
We know he’ll be back in Thor: Love and Thunder, presumably to pass the hammer on to Natalie Portman’s Jane Foster. It has also been suggested that Thor and the Guardians could be in an Asgardians of the Galaxy movie.
Whether that will be its own movie or part of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is a question that will presumably be answered in Phase 5 of the MCU, which would start in 2022.
However, Chris Hemsworth has one piece of unfinished business to take care of before all that – and that’s to appear on What If…?, along with many of his other Marvel cohorts.
What will Thor do in ‘What If…?’
According to Screen Rant, Chris Hemsworth will return along with Chadwick Boseman as T’Challa, Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury, Karen Gillan as Nebula, Tom Hiddleston as Loki, Josh Brolin as Thanos, Hayley Atwell as Peggy Carter and Michael B. Jordan as Erik Killmonger.
The show wonders what would have happened if history had been just a little different. For instance, what if Peggy Carter took the Super Soldier serum instead of Steve Rogers?
What their article doesn’t say is exactly how Thor will figure into the show. It’s not known if Thor would be the focus of his own story, or if he would figure in someone else’s. Screen Rant does note there is a fan theory about the very question that plagued Thor in Endgame: What if he had gone for Thanos’ head?
In Infinity War. Thor seemed to get the better of Thanos when he plunged his axe through Thanos’ chest. However, Thanos taunted Thor by saying he should have gone through the head and executed the snap heard around the world.
Thor does go for Thanos’ head when he finds him later, but by then it’s too late to reverse the damage – until Tony Stark figures out how time travel works.
If Thor had gone for Thanos’ head in the first place, things would have been very different. He would have been hailed as hero even more so than usual, and Avatar would still be the most successful movie of all time, because there would be no need for an Avengers: Endgame.
What is Thor’s future?
Since there was an Endgame, however, Thor is in a better place, MCU-wise than many of his partners. Black Widow is dead although she has a prequel to come, and no matter how much fans beg them to do so, Robert Downey Jr and Chris Evans will probably not return for anything other than a cameo.
The Hulk is still around, but the MCU hasn’t plotted put a future for him that we know about. Hawkeye is getting his own series, although it’s hard to imagine what that would entail besides him training a new generation of archers.
With Thor, the possibilities are many. In addition to Love and Thunder, and the team up with the Guardians, it seems very likely he’ll pop up somewhere in the Loki series.
That hasn’t been confirmed, but Hemsworth will probably at least make an appearance somewhere. And even if Natalie Portman gets to be a new Thor, that brings up its own fascinating question – what does Thor do when he’s not Thor anymore? When you’re a god, the sky is beyond the limit.
